truecitizen, I welcome your comments when your taxes go up to pay for the added bed days, "regardless of crowding in the jails." There is no perfect solution to anything involved in the criminal justice system. You put the hammer down, and the taxes required to pay for it throws the half community into an uproar. You become more lenient to keep taxes lower, and it throws the other part of the community into an uproar.
When you look at the county website, and actually do some reading, you will see in the last couple years there has been nearly $3 million saved by not having inmates housed out of county as a result of programs such as workender, RECAP, and etc.
The county budget meetings are coming up in the next couple weeks, with a public hearing 11/4/09 at 6pm. I will be there, and encourage you to come to push for a higher budget for the Sheriff's Office so they can pay for the added bed days which would result from your plan.
I challenge you to fight for mroe funding, and make sure you tell the county board you are not bothered by higher taxes to do so.

We could always recruit a recently unemployed Illinois Govenor, he certainly has a full head of hair, wouldn't that make him more qualified?

I am going to make a note of this day, that way I can see if he claims it for per diem for being in Madison. I believe the amount is $88 per day, which is "earned" for being in the Capitol. As a laid off person myself, I would have to say we need more action rather than great fancy speeches.

Isn't a requirement for that Statistic to be able and looking for a job? Those from GM (no disrepect meant) are collecting their sub pay, therefore they would not be actively looking for a job right? Wouldn't this mean they will not be included?

To quote SarahB "Just got to change your prespective on all these people retiring, resigning, etc.: Lots of upper-income job openings!!"
Great, more upper management jobs so we can pay an outside firm to overlook Janesville Residents and hire from who knows where!

Its no surprise that GM has 4:1 the dealerships that Toyota has. Toyota simply has Toyota and Lexus dealerships, and typically the Scions are sold at Toyota dealerships.
Now look at GM. They have Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Hummer, Saturn, and Cadillac. I wouldn't consider Saab and such, because they are smaller brands. Now, typically the Saturn dealers are stand alone, as are the Hummer. You pair up a couple of the others such as Chevy and Cadillac, and then Buick with GMC, and there is no shock they are going to have 4 times the dealerships. Seems like pretty simple math to me.

To set the record straight, it the history of this plant being in operation, they have never produced wheels for Janesville or Belvedere. In the past Ford was the major customer, then it shifted to Nissan and Chrysler, and finally Honda in the recent years. The GM Janesville situation had no bearing on this plant closing, it is more tied to the entire automotive industry going down the tube.

Having worked in this facility in the past, I can honestly say I am surprised it has taken this long. I feel for each and every employee there as losing your job is never easy. Corporate never wanted to be in the Cast Auto Wheel business from the beginning, just came with the package when they bought out Reynolds. A little more support from above, and I think this plant could have made it, the foundation for a successful business was certainly in place.

They also have the ability to build multiple platforms on many of their assembly lines. I am not talking about a Tahoe and a Suburban, but a mid size vehicle and a SUV or some sort. They are able to build what the demand is, and not pile up 150+ days on hand of inventory because the plant only builds one vehicle. Times are tough now, and give it a few months, and even they will be laying off people if things don't improve.

On Jail alternative programs

I do agree with you that controling these people comes from within. The reality is that many of these offenders simply are not easily changed by sittingin jail. You are forgetting many people in jail are financially challenged, therefore 3 hots and a cot is not that bad of a deal. This is addition to the fact that many of their "co-workers" for lack of a better term, are also incarcerated. This gives them an opportunity to catch up, realign there actions with what is going on in real time, and move forward.

I am not trying to sway your opinion, you are certainly entitled to it. I am simply saying that the reality is there is way too much money being thrown into the criminal justice system, that something needs to be done. I would certainly doubt that violent offenders are getting on a bus to go do commmunity service. Not that I am saying that non-violent crimes should be ignored, but in some cases, saving some bed days, and bettering the community, if even in a small way can be more beneficial to the community as a whole.
