On Teachers reject Janesville School Board's offer

Posted on September 14 at 10:55 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Has anyone ever thought about the fact that education starts at home? Everyone is so quick to bash teachers and point out that they don't produce high enough test scores or enough college bound students, etc. but step into any classroom on any day and you will see why. Teachers can't even begin to teach the 30+ kids they have sitting in front of them until they have made sure all their kids have had breakfast, have warm clothes on for recess, teach them appropriate social behaviors, listen to them cry because they were up all night worried about what mom and dad were fighting about...and that is all before 10 am. Teachers are constantly fighting uphill battles and doing the best they can with the limited resources they have. Its difficult to produce 30 kids bound to Ivy League schools when parents don't do their job and try to blame everyone else for it. And even after these teachers are continually told they are selfish, lazy, and whatever else has been said, they still go to work everyday and do the best they can for each and every child in this community because they love kids.

On Union leader suggests closing Madison schools Wednesday

All of these comments are very interesting and sad. I see no indication that these employees think they are better than anyone else. Maybe some of you should do some research before you start bashing teachers. Teaching is a very demanding profession especially when parents aren't doing their jobs at home. Budgets are tight everywhere, and with less money coming in to schools, it is harder to meet the diverse needs of all students in the classroom. Most teachers spend huge amounts of money out of their own pockets just to help students succeed. And most do it without complaint. Any good teacher works long hours preparing dynamic lessons for the students and don't get paid for it. At any other job, you could turn in a timecard for that. If it was your job being affected in the same manner as educators, most of you would be the first to complain and want support. So instead of holding yourself to a higher standard and assuming that teachers don't deserve the support of a union, stand up for your fellow workers. Support them when needed, because you never know when you may need the support!

On Craig's Kuehne to retire at the end of the school year

I can't believe some people on here. Most of you who are posting negative comments are probably not in education and have no idea what it is like everyday in a school. Janesville is lucky to have an administrator that is so dedicated to the city as well as the students. I am not an educator in Janesville, but just Dr. Kuehne's length of time served in the district says something about him. The next time you drop your student off at school, you should thank your child's teacher or principal. If you don't have kids, you should ask to go sit in a classroom for a day and see what it is REALLY like. We should congratulate him on his retirement and thank him for his service. Good luck and enjoy your time. You deserve it!!!
