Ms. Cepeda makes an excellent point about alluring appearances and high risk factor. Marketing lethal equipment, in this case firearms, which appear toy-like, is not a good idea, IMO. A life-long [I’m a Baby Boomer] hunter, recreational target shooter, and competitive rifle shooter, I support removing such color schemes from the market. Would not train my grandchildren with such things.
.
‘Would be interesting to see statistics on household tragedies in which colorful, but deadly, household cleaning products have been chewed, eaten, and drunk by children mistaking them for soft drinks, fruit juice, etc. Keeping in mind, of course, Negligence vs Accident. My son got to experience ipecac because that doughnut-like toilet bowl table looked like a harmless edible.

Good points oiseau! The collective "we" should call it what it is, certainly.
.
Pick any danger that may cause loss of life: unsecured swimming pool; prescription or strong OTC drugs; matches & lighters; choking hazards, to name a few. I agree that we owe it to Honesty - - to the concept of civil discourse - - to speak the truth. "Negligence" is NOT the same as "accident". Feels the same. Still tragic. Still avoidable, in most cases. Still dead or maimed or broken. But not the same.
.
I respect most of Ms. Cepeda's writing. Perhaps you might write her and share your perspective.
On Janesville's Logli store changing name

My family enjoys Logli for many reasons.
.
Marginal employees continue their rude, indifferent ways because grownup customers allow it. Go directly to the manager and voice your complaint, folks! You're busy? Phone management as soon as you have a moment. Easy as that.
.
Good management knows that you have alternatives to shopping there, and they'll likely take steps to "train" the employee.
.
And compliment the good ones to management, too. They deserve it.

What? DEFENSIVE, safe driving saves lives, NOT loud mufflers/pipes?

Sorry, 'had a Harley Moment!

What's wrong with those silly buggy drivers?
.
Certainly the motorcycle must have had loud, modified tail pipes/muffler so the buggy driver could hear the bike coming and then get out of its way!
.
Loud Pipes Save Lives, dontchaknow!
On Tensions between bicyclists, drivers

While visiting in Florida during winter I encountered a man whose bike sports an electric motor and drive mechanism. Relatively new to the American market, he told me - - another import from China.
.
This bike was quite fast and is every bit as quiet as the pedal version. A potential recipe for trouble.
.
I'm not a fear monger by nature, but I sense there will be potentially serious problems as these become more common on hiking/biking/walking paths, in addition to streets. Indeed, the former "Crazy TV Lenny" (of Madison, WI) has announced plans for a new store in Madison where these will be sold.
.
Anyone else out there with knowledge and experience with these?

As a motorist, I appreciate the cyclists who wear those vibrant colors. "Safety Green" -- or what ever its real name is -- always catches my eye.
.
The new generation of pulsing LED lights, fore and aft, help me pick out the cyclist, too.
.
If "you" as the cyclist help me spot you sooner, it will be a much safer place for both, eh!

Hopefully the new parking stalls will be wide enough and deep enough to accommodate the giant SUVs and vans which hog parking spaces!
.
Planners will have only this one chance to get this facet correct!
.
Lots of wee people darting among crowded parking is a potential for tragedy.

On A very lethal plaything

Responsible parenting is great! Would that Ms. Cepeda’s strategy could be universal. As a boy in the 1950s my Dad taught us kids to always verify that the firearm is unloaded. He hammered into us that we must always clear any firearm of ammunition before cleaning and storing it. I still hear his voice each time I return from the field or the range. And prior to handling any firearm when removing from storage, always work the action, to again verify that it is empty and safe.
.
Lacking responsible parenting like my Dad’s and Ms. Cepeda’s, I advocate that our public schools allow safety program such as Eddie Eagle [please see:http://www.nra.org/Article.aspx?id=1353 ]. Give it a look - - quick read, easy to grasp, and has proven track record of keeping kids safe.
.
Before ranting that it’s propaganda from the NRA, look it over. It does not advocate for firearms ownership or any sort of posturing. It’s all about keeping children safe. Only the most bitter, polarized mindset could argue against it. Wouldn’t a single saved life be worth the implementation of an apolitical, agenda-free safety program?
