Kudos to the Janesville School District if seat belts are installed in school buses! I was hurt in one of the two bus accidents that occurred in Janesville in 1963 and 1964 on the way to Hillcrest Grade School. The first bus accident occurred under the viaduct on Cty. Hwy. 14 on the way to school in the morning. Lost teeth, broken jaws, broken arms and legs happened to classmates that December. The following year our school bus, again on the morning route to Hillcrest, in the winter, traveled through Riverside Park. We were traveling through the park past the Elk's Club and slid on the sheets of ice covering the road. We slid, hitting tree after tree. My face slammed against the bus window, breaking the window, and slapped the metal handbar and metal back of the seat in front of me. I had a concussion and a really banged up face. But again, others suffered broken limbs, jaws, lost teeth. We were bounced around like rag dolls from ceiling to floor. I believe if seat belts had been in the buses, we would have been better anchored in our seats and many of those injuries could have been prevented.

Dear Editor, Thank you for gazetteextra.com! As former, longtime residents of Janesville, our family is most grateful for being able to view our hometown paper online from another community. The website keeps us connected to the Janesville we still love and continue to monitor. Our prayers and thoughts in recent weeks have been very much focused on the flood waters and the sad news of GM's departure. If we were in town, we'd support local delivery of the paper! But, thank-you for the website, we very much appreciate it! I'm not sure it would be a good idea for Janesville to subscribe to a 'membership fee' on line at this time. With the economy doing so poorly, you may lose viewer/reader support altogether. Times are tough for Janesville.

Let's all say a prayer that those affected by flood waters will seek refuge elsewhere and be okay. No one likes leaving their home, be it due to economics (foreclosures) or mother nature. Somethings are out of our control. Peace to you.

Kudos to the Dean/St. Mary's organization for bringing a positive new change and direction for Janesville. In a time when we have a down economy and a recession in the country, I would think everyone would welcome new opportunity and new jobs to the Rock County area. It's a good thing. Really.

This is a story that will never end for Mary. I encourage everyone to support her and petition the courts to keep this murderer behind bars. And, kudos to the Janesville Gazette for writing this story! It's incredible to think that this man could be on the streets again! Keep him behind bars.
On Altar servers find ways to deepen faith

In response to Wisconsinheat, I just want to say that I am not singling out an altar server, I am trying to make a point that THIS IS THE MOVEMENT OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH across America: a return to a pre-Vatican II thinking, and I feel it is not particularly a good thing. Our Bishop Morlino has recently held a High Pontifical Mass in Madison. I'm afraid that women will not be a part of the ministries of serving at the altar if we return to a Latin Mass. So, what do you think our burnt out St. Raphael Cathedral will look like when it ever gets rebuilt? It'll host the Latin Mass. This is my opinion and my browneyes see it coming.

"Altar servers find ways to deepen faith" article reflects nicely on how the children wish to serve their parish. However, one comment by altar server Gabe Szerlong disturbs me: "He's also excited about an upcoming Latin Mass server training." So, does this mean that our diocese and our diocesan priests are preparing altar servers for those pre-Vatican II days of long ago? I thought the Church was advancing? Perhaps not in the Diocese of Madison? The conservative movement in this diocese is very apparent by this statement of Szerlong. We should be very concerned because, if that's the case, (the return of the Latin Mass), you can pretty much bet that girls and young women won't be allowed to serve at the altar any longer if we return to a pre-Vatican II mentality. This is very concerning. I should think we all need to pray about this: an altar turned around, the priest's back facing you and the return of a Latin Mass. Is this what Catholics really want? I know that I couldn't tolerate it. I think all Catholics should be a bit concerned.

If Bishop Morlino was a true shepherd of the flock and a "good steward" of the Diocese of Madison, perhaps he could have brought a real message of hope to those attending last evening's Mass in the form of a $check$. If you are Catholic, you know that he will expect his Diocesan Service Appeal dollars to still come in the door after the holidays from all his parishes to support the "ministries" of the Diocese of Madison. Bishop's prayers should fool no one...he lives a rather "royal" lifestyle. I believe he is out of touch with the lives of every day families and what it takes to put food on the table and pay the bills. Everything he has is provided for him. Wake up Catholics! It is time the Diocese consider what they can do for those Catholics and even non Catholics facing unemployment. Cloth the naked, feed the poor.... But, I've heard the diocese is 'over their budget.' So, apparently there are no extra dollars out there in Bishop's pocket; he has spent it already! How many trips has he had this year alone? Trips to Australia for World Youth Day with his 20+ seminarians and entourage of diocesan staff. That does cost quite a bit! Trips to Rome several times this year; trips everywhere! Life on that diocesan hill in Madison is still fairly posh and this Bishop is clueless. In difficult times like the country and Janesville are facing now, it simply takes green dollars to pay the bills and keep the heat on. And it takes getting hired and having a job. There are no jobs out there, Bishop! This Catholic has been there, and it's tough. Bishop Morlino needs to get real and quit fooling the flock! This Bishop should be held fiscally responsible for the stewardship of a diocese. He is not. In the secular world...CEO's go to jail for misuse of company funds. Read the Catholic Herald and watch his travels! So Catholics, hold your DSA dollars, put food on your tables and pray to the God above. Morlino won't help you!
