On Winter predictions differ

Posted on September 18 at 9:29 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

The woolly caterpillars (the black and orange ones) are nearly bald this fall, so we're going to have a light winter. Has anyone else heard about this weather prediction method from their grandpas?

Folklore says winter weather will be bad if: the woolly caterpillar's black bands are wider than the orange bands, the woolly caterpillars have heavy coats, lots of them are seen crawling around before the first frost, and they move unusually slow.

Here's a couple more old-time winter weather predictors:

If bears and horses get thick coats early, then expect a severe winter.
Squirrels are busier gathering nuts before a bad winter.
If wasps build their nests high, a severe winter is on its way.

On DNR: Dead cougar in Chicago could be Milton-area cat

Did anyone see the video clip of the cougar running AWAY from the police officer? He didn't look like he was in attack mode. (I'm talking about the cougar, BTW.)
So this cougar is D-E-A-D. It was said this was in fact a wild animal, not a released "pet." That means we can probably expect to find others migrating here. Why don't we use this as a learning experience and have our officers of law actually carry tranquiler guns and learn about how to deal with wild animals, and even domestic and farm animals? Wouldn't that have been great for the parade in Milton?
Also, shouldn't every community that holds a circus with wild animals be REQUIRED to have an officer or veterinarian ON HAND, tranquilizer gun in hand, the entire time the animal is uncaged?
In fact, why don't they just tranquilize humans instead of tazing them? It seems a lot less violent all the way around.

This is more than just "weeping" about a dead cougar and just because some of us weep for the cougars doesn't mean we don't also "weep" about the other tragedies of the world -- nor does it mean that we only weep, not celebrate. It means we care and want to make a difference. I guess some people were only gifted a small amount of compassion.

"It was originally spotted in an elementary school parking lot where a daycare was still active." So okay, it was there, it didn't hurt anyone, right? Why shoot it?
Running through backyards, jumping over fences, what's so criminal about that? Why shoot it?
As far as threatening officers, what's it supposed to do when its backed in a corner in a strange place by a predator? I'd threaten too. Why shoot it?
Why not leave it cornered, call the ASPCA and have them tranquilize it? If it lunges okay, shoot (provided you don't advance too close on it first, forcing its hand!)
Sounds like the old "shoot now, ask questions later" philosophy.

So everyone's saying these cougars have been around for years, and the DNR has denied it.
It makes you wonder if the stories about Big Foot/Sasquatch that the DNR keeps denying could be true too. Anyone spot one of those in a barn?

Stupidisassstupiddoes and 1919 eternal are among the many who state that these cougars have been around for years. If so, where are all the reports of the victims of these so-called vicious beasts?
"They should be shot on sight before something happens. These animals will attack unprovoked," says stupidisassstupiddoes. Others say shoot the "beasts" before they can eat our children. I agree with janesvillereader who is more concerned about a bulldog than the "elusive" cougars, but I say lets take the guns against the sexual predators and child molesters. I'll bet they've killed more children than cougars. Now google that. And while you're at it, google how many mosquitoes have killed people and children, should we start blowing our shotguns all over this summer? In fact mosquitoes have killed more people than any other animal (I don't know if humans killing other humans counts). Next is snakes, then killer bees. Hmmm, is there any ammo smaller than BBs? How else we gonna hunt these killers?

I just read this on channel3000.com:

"Cougars are listed as "protected wild animals" in Wisconsin which means a permit would be required from the DNR before someone could kill the animal."

"Fendry said that people shouldn't get overly concerned about news of a possible cougar sighting in the area. He said cougars coexist fine with people and that it is very rare to have an incident between a cougar and the public."

(Doug Fendry, DNR wildlife supervisor at Fitchburg)

"Fendry said that people should contact him if they observe a large cat in the northeast Rock County and southern Jefferson County area. He can be reached at 608-275-3230."

http://www.channel3000.com/news/15113257...

It would have been nice if the Rock Co. Gazette could have gotten this information instead of starting a big scare and a witch (cougar) hunt and making us go to a Dane Co. news source for the info we need.

Does anyone know the answer to this:
The DNR has set particular weeks/months and we have laws that enforce when one can hunt many animals/birds such as deer, rabbit, fox, possum, coons, woodchucks, badgers, bobcats, mink, beavers, turkeys and even skunks, squirrels, crow and doves.
See:http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/wildlife/hunt/seasdate.htm

So what's the law on cougars?
Bobcat is from Oct. 18-Dec. 31. So would one shooting a cougar be ticketed?

Are you men or mice? Big bad boys with their big guns just want to shoot everything.

Had the cougar wanted to kill Edwardson it could easily have done so. But it didn't, even though it was trapped and cornered in a barn. Obviously it's not vicious, so why is everyone suggesting violence against it? It's probably just scared. What if it was someone's domesticated "pet?"

Please be real men and don't shoot the poor, scared creature. Call the DNR and hope they have the balls to tranquilize it and transport it to where it belongs.
