On Charter will not restrict access channels

OK, Charter, how about fixing the SOUND on Channel 13 (the School District of Janesville public access channel)? I have digital cable, Channel 12 has sound, Channel 13 has no sound, and it affects every TV in my house. I KNOW it's a problem with the Charter feed.

SarahB, you are too right. I encourage you to watch Liz's speech on the community channel (I forget where it is on Charter's lineup, it's the school district channel) if you can next week. She would agree with you 100% that all it takes to make a patient happy (homeless, addict, or otherwise) is to treat them with kindness and respect (and of course to give them quality medical care!).

Thank you, Liz and Quint. Liz's message was loud and clear, and yet the entire audience was laughing out loud. What a great way to start out the new school year!
On Poverty's punch: Stress, uncertainty haunt children in poverty

Kathy, if you're reading these posts, please don't be discouraged by everyone who is judging you based on the Gazette's snapshot of your life.

Keep going to school. College is your best route out of poverty, and if your children see you complete college and get a good-paying job with benefits, they will remember it forever. They will also know that college is a worthwhile choice for their own futures.
*
They are young enough that over time, they will forgive you for any poor decisions you made in the past and will admire you for turning your life around.
*
If I may make a suggestion or two, please look into any free parenting or money management classes that are available (such as Exchange Family Resource Center or Lutheran Social Services). I know you're already overwhelmed, but we could all use some helpful parenting tricks or tips on budgeting and setting priorities.
*
You have set several goals for yourself and your family. Keep it up! You have difficult times ahead of you, but it will only get better over time.

I agree, biggirl. It would be nice if everyone could afford three- and four-year-old programs, but we know that's not the case. I hope the families affected can access P4J in Janesville.

The idea is to have all students ready to learn when they start kindergarten, and it is often (but not always) children from low-income families who are behind their peers when they start kindergarten.

And, who exactly will prepare all the "Cliff's notes" and agenda of every staff meeting in the school district? Sounds like we'll need a dozen or more new clerical staff to meticulously record each and every idea and opinion presented whenever two or more people meet.

What exactly is "strange" about this meeting and others like it? That all the administrators in the district do planning and training together? You DON'T want our administrators talking to one another? This is an unusual event because during the school year, these people are running their buildings and programs and don't have a whole day to schedule together. Do you want them to all operate independently of one another and not share common goals and procedures? How do you think this happens, by osmosis?

And for the record, it certainly was a "bit of fun" in addition to a day of work. Don't any of you ever have fun with your coworkers? If not, please don't knock people who enjoy an opportunity to socialize with their colleagues (and not on the taxpayer's dime).

There were no cocktails in the meeting room, just a bunch of laptops and planning and coffee. Breakfast, lunch and dinner (and transportation) were provided by Mr. Studer because he supports the district's efforts to implement his improvement strategies.

The bus was air-conditioned, with TVs that played DVDs. No attendant, no latte machine, no satellite TV.

This was just a nice day to get away from the office and focus on planning for the future. The city of Janesville is lucky to have a sponsor like Mr. Studer who values education, and a school board and administration willing to make difficult changes on behalf of students.

This must have been horrifying for the little girl and her parents. Thank goodness for the kindness of family friends; I would like to hope that strangers would have come to her aid, as well.

John Walczak and Steve Eichman are good people and I know they care about the students under their supervision. I'm sure they will make certain this never happens again. This is a reminder to go over safety and emergency rules with all our children.

Best wishes to all involved, especially the little girl beginning her education.
