It is quite offensive (and ignorant) that anyone would consider a college education for adults to be equivalent to adult day care.
On Will city do away with one-ways?
Posted on October 28 at 5:56 a.m. ( Suggest removal )
This is not a good idea! Not only does this affect the downtown area, it impacts neighborhoods. Having one-ways actually helps limit the amount of traffic "cutting through" residential neighborhoods. Why would we want to increase traffic flows through neighborhoods? Also, Court street has the large hill; can you imagine traffic tearing down that thing? Lastly, I happen to believe the one-ways add a certain amount of charm to the downtown area!
On Cell tower proposed at Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds

I also know several people who live in the fairgrounds area and have difficulty receiving good cell phone signals in their homes. At this point, the lack of good reception is actually adding an expense for some. Many people who have purchased cell phones would like to eliminate their traditional "land lines" and switch to only cell phone usage which is the growing trend in America and other countries. (In fact many college dorms now don't provide traditional phone jacks.) However, due to limited reception in certain areas--such as near the fairgrounds, citizens are paying for a phone line at an expense of approximately $300 a year. Better reception would equate to savings for many of these people...

justsaynotomath - My intention was not to be rude, but rather to focus the discussion on the issue at hand, not your personal financial situation. By the way, why did you assume my spouse was my husband??? I think your assumption was interesting and shows that things are not always what they appear at first glance...I really do wish you well...and yes, I do agree with those who stated that those with access to contracts and such should review them thoroughly. I did not mean to suggest that I know all of the details at hand, but rather again, to suggest that sometimes we don't have all of the information.

Justsaynotomath - you said that "funding" was insufficient. Does this mean your husband is paid out of special funds or grants? Just wondered, as it would make sense that if "special" subsidized monies were not adequate, that positions would be eliminated. Also, just because someone is "senior" doesn't mean he/she can bump someone. I believe that only qualifies if their are less senior fulltime instructors with exactly the same certifications AND qualifications. I am certainly not in favor of the pay raises for adminstration in light of the reduction in full-time instructors/teachers, however, it really is not appropriate to blame them for any individual's financial position. My spouse and I have always made sure that we would be covered if neither of us had a job. This is not any employer's responsiblity; it is your own.

Lady Antebellum is a new up and coming country band. I actually don't listen to country on a regular basis, but I know who they are. They were recently nominated for some major awards (new group, maybe??). They have a music video out and at least one album. There current hit "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" is getting a lot of play time. The group is 2 guys and a girl, all 20ish, all extremely talented and diverse. I normally would not go to a country concert, but I will definately be there as will several teens I know who don't normally listen to country.

vetman - I think you are misguided in your figures about BTC instructor salaries. It is true that there was an article published last year about salaries in the state for tech college instructors, however, most of the data was skewed by those instructors in the Milwaukee area who choose to teach much overtime and accordingly make much more than the average instructor at BTC. (Also in most other areas of the state, the normal teaching load is 10-20% less than the load at BTC, which further inflates the salaries of non-BTC tech college instructors. Other tech colleges are paying instructors overtime for hours BTC instructors teach as part of their normal loads.) According to the 2006-2007 pay scale, a first year instructor with only a bachelor's degree and work experience would make 39K while a 15 year BTC teacher with a masters and 24additional credits would make 73K. I doubt there are more than one or two instructors at BTC who make $100K or more. Also, I don't really think comparing K-12 with college instructors is an equal comparison. In the tech college area, you are asking professionals in various areas to take a pay cut to teach hands on skills. Nurses, welders, and CPAs for example could be making considerably more in their respective career fields then they are teaching. If salaries aren't at least minimally attractive, the pool of qualified, quality instructors is severely restricted.
On Snow make-up days must be scheduled

Dobberino - although conferences were held for an evening (Wed) and a day (Thurs) in both fall and earlier this month, students had 2 "non-teaching" days both times. Students did not have school on the day of the conferences (Thursdays) and did not have school on Friday, either. So, if we are counting days the students are "out" of the buildings, there are 4 total. (I realize that staff members were present for the conferences, but it is a non-teaching day.)

Dobberino - I am pretty sure the kids (at least at the high school) had 4 days off for PT conferences--two in the fall and two just recently, so your calculations aren't quite right. Once adjusted, they will be exactly as reported.

I also have friends in the UK. Or maybe "had" friends is a better way to put it. Drugs which are FDA approved in the US are often not used in socialized medicine countries as they are deemed "not cost effective". (This means the disease is not common and the drugs are expensive.) A friend died from a disease as medicine was not made available due to the cost. Other friends in the US with the same disease take the drugs and are living beautiful tax-paying lives. I don't think it is any governments' responsibility or right to chose the value of a life.
