On Security class builds bond between police, taverns

hiii98 - You are wrong about the staff at Quotes. I know first-hand that the bouncers ask the patrons that are causing problems to leave before using any sort of force, but hannah stated, people aren't just going to leave if you ask them if they are causing problems. Usually, by then they are too drunk to care and have that "liquid courage" flowing through their veins so they don't care.

Yes, there have been incidents in the past at Quotes, but that was years ago. Things are different down there, thanks to the security staff working to keep trouble out of the bar.

And as for them never calling the cops, if you recall the article where the JPD reported the number of contacts a number of local establishments have had with the police, Quotes had the highest number. That is because the security staff will call JPD if they need to, for anything from verifying an ID if they believe it to be false, to getting someone that is causing trouble out of their bar. Quotes security staff is more than willing to work with the JPD, and makes contact with officers often, when it is needed, and on occasion, if a bouncer sees an officer he will talk to him and just let him know how things are going down at the bar, or downtown.

So please, before you make these conclusions, know what's going on. You yourself said you no longer frequent Quotes, so don't make judgements about the "new" security there based on the past problems they have had.

And yes I agree, Quotes is one of the cleaner and more organized bars in Janesville, despite the problems that they may face or have faced in the past (which are no different than any other bar).

Thank you. There are no other words that can be said to you men and women. Because of you, we can be here, on our computers and internet, voicing our opinions.

Good luck and come home to us!!

teacher2b, when I began reading some posts I immediately thought of the same bumper sticker as you, so I thought it fitting to (attempt) to post it on here for all. However, apparently you can't post pictures within these comments, so here is the link.

mgmgrand-your comments about proper training are exactly what I was talking about in regards to concealed carry. And as for employees being able to have weapons, they should go through training just like everyone else. However, I think maybe MORE training, in regards to the situations they may face. Sorry if I weren't more clear earlier about that earlier!

Hannah-that's why I suggested that people are trained properly on how to use firearms, that way it would not come down to innocent people losing their lives. And there were other circumstances that prevented her from spraying him before he got the money, but I understand what you meant!

curlysue- I did not say that an employer would train the employees. I meant that they would have to take a training course, similar, or more strenuous, than that you have to take in order to carry a concealed weapon. And I'm not saying retail, more the little business where there is no one else there. And as for that AZ situation, obviously the store owner didn't know how to properly use the gun, or innocent people would not have gotten hurt.

ihavealife- yes it was just broken into less than a month ago unfortunately, but then it was closed and there was no one there. This is more serious than a breaking like what happened before.

This is why we should have Concealed Carry in WI. Business owners should be allowed to have some sort of protection for themselves/their employees/their business on hand, without having to risk losing insurance coverage, or having to worry about leaving their employees alone at night. No one (employees or business owners) should have to worry about this happening in their workplace.

Obviously, I think that the only way that it would be effective, and safe, for a weapon to be present in the workplace is through proper training and certification of each employee. But I think that this would deter would-be criminals from preying on those employees that they know will be helpless to them - instead, they will have to think about the fact that the potential victim may have a weapon also. And knowing that they are properly trained on how to effectively use the weapon could also be a means to deter.

In this case, it was a lucky thing that the employee had the pepper spray, and the composure (and guts!) to use it to protect her self and her workplace, which prevented the criminal from getting any more money than he did get away with.

It just amazes me that someone would risk spending a good chunk, if not the rest, of their life in prison for $480! But unfortunately, those are the times we live in - which is again the reason we should have Concealed Carry here in WI!!

*** PART TWO ***

And I also agree with you that have sait parents do the best they can, but can't be with there children 24/7. But, there are some instances where parents CAN do better, and that is something that should be examined. It could be as simple as having more open conversations with you teens. I just want to state that I do not condone underage drinking, even though, yes, I participated, but I can count on one hand how many times I drank while in high school, and even before I was 21, but I NEVER got behind the wheel of a car!! (And even now, being nearly 23 years old, I refuse to drink and drive, even after ONE drink.) And for this, I thank my parents. They always said something along the lines of 'we know what happens at parties, and we trust you, but we want you to know that if you are ever somewhere, and you should decide to drink, know that you can call us for a ride - no matter what.' No my parents were not telling me to go get wasted and that it would be ok, I knew that it would be disappointing to them should I get drunk at a party, and that I would probably get in trouble, but that they would respect me for being responsible enough to not drive or get behind in the car with someone who had been drinking.

Again, I AM NOT CONDONING UNDERAGE DRINKING - but if teens/people know that there is always going to be someone for them to call for a ride, then at least we won't have to worry (as much) about drunk driving, or accidents such as this.

I hope that the friends of these girls are able to truly learn from their mistakes.

And lastly, Stewy and luluberry, why you felt the need to bring politics into this debate is beyond me (an I'm sure many others here, too). This has nothing to do with politics, or who is president, or who may or may not become president. Your comments were irrelevant to the topic at hand. I (again, with many others, I'm sure) just wish that you, and others like yourself, that wish to bring up politics where they have no place, or bearing, would just leave it out of your discussions. Its pointless to bring it up where its irrelevant. But again, just my opinion!

*** Sorry this was so long, but after reading everyone's comments, I had a lot to say!! Thanks if you actually read it all!! ***

*** PART ONE ***

First, I want to start by saying that these are my personal opinions, and I expect some of you to disagree with them, and that's ok with me, I don't mind. We are all entitled to our opinions - don't judge me, and I won't judge you...unless of course your opinions are so uneducated and brain-dead that I feel more stupid by reading them.

So, I think that obviously it must be proven whether or not the girls were drinking. (I'm guessing that, from those of you on here that are personally connected to the girls and your comments, that they were - but please, correct me if I am wrong - I DO NOT MIND!!) If they weren't then ok, it was an accident that is forgivable - as long as there were circumstances that were unpreventable. **READ: NO TEXTING BEHIND THE WHEEL, ETC... **

HOWEVER, if these girls were drinking and driving, I do believe that there needs to be action taken. Too often we read about people getting soft punishments, if any at all. I do think that these girls (along with other people, not just teens, who have DUIs, etc..) should go through treatment/counseling. And I agree with the comment below about meeting with people who have lost friends and/or family to drunk driving. But I think that maybe a framed picture of the vehicle wrapped around the pole, so that they will never forget HOW LUCKY THEY GOT in the fact that neither of them, or anyone else, was killed by their choices. I know some of you may think this may be too harsh, and that they will 'be haunted by this forever' without this memory, but look at Krystal Hart, who obviously had complete disregard for the result her actions had (I know, not everyone is like her, and some people DO learn from their mistakes), but having a constant reminder of "This could have been worse - I COULD HAVE DIED/KILLED MYSELF OR MY FRIEND!!" may be what is needed (by some) in order to truly remind these girls of just how LUCKY they are to be given a second chance.

Now, I don't want you all to think that I don't have sympathy for these girls or their friends and families, because I do - to an extent. I feel for the girls because they were hurt - but that is all. They are the ones that made the decision to put themselves in this position, and NO ONE ELSE. But I mostly feel sympathy for the families. They have to deal with this, and for the parents, I'm sure they are dealing with the "what ifs", like "what if I told her she had to be home earlier", or "what if I said that she couldn't go out tonight", etc...

On Parker wrestling-room plans to change

Posted on March 12 at 8:30 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

Because my family has ties to the Parker Wrestling program, I am extremely glad to see that the school board has made the decision to include a wrestling room in the now renovation plans. I am also glad to see that they changed their decision because a referendum is supposed to represent what "the people" want, and considering that this new wrestling room was part of the referendum that we all voted for (or against) in 2006, it was wise for them to change their decision to include what "the people" voted on, not to some new plan that was not part of the original referendum. If they were going to make such drastic changes, it should have been re-presented to voters. Also, I have heard that the vote was so close in the results of the referendum issue that if just the parents of current wrestlers were taken out of the "YES" category and put into the "NO" category, the referendum would not have gone through. As a person who voted YES to the referendum in 2006, you can bet that if the referendum was presented to me the way that the district has changed it, I surely would have voted NO. Why is it fair, or even right, to take away a practice area from a very successful athletic program and give that room to larger locker rooms, athletic offices, and more showers. (As a graduate from Parker, I only remember ever using the showers after swim, so why the need for larger/more showers? And the locker rooms really weren't that crowded during gym.) The alternatives that were given to the wrestling program was to practice in PART of the new gymnasium and to suspend their mats from the ceiling. To me this sounds just as unsafe as if you were to send them out to the parking lot. It is necessary for the wrestlers to has proper padding, including that on the walls as is in the current wrestling room. Also, there are certain coaches at Parker who only hold closed practices, where only the team and coaches are allowed in the gym. What effect will this have on a team such as wrestling? Will they then have to hold late night or early morning practices to work around those certain coaches?

Recently, some of the parents of Parker Wrestlers began a petition to get the original decision of not including the wrestling room in the plans, many of which received a great deal of support from those in the community who were willing to sign the petition. Whether or not these were presented at the meeting last night I do not know, but it just goes to show the importance of this WONDERFUL athletic program to the community and the dedication of the athletes and their families to work hard to get what this program fully deserves!

On Cigarette tax is about saving lives, money

Posted on November 13 at 9:01 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I agree with everyone else here that is stating that this is for money. They try to say this tax is to provide health care benefits and such for smokers, right? As a non-smoker I find this absolutely ridiculous. If it is that big of a deal to care for smokers on Medicaid, then do not provide health care for problems related to smoking. We as taxpayers should not have to pay more money for habits to provide for others. Smokers already pay higher premiums on thier insurance coverages (health and life) because they smoke. Now, to me it seems that they are already paying that extra on those things because they smoke, so why should they have to pay extra taxes to provide for others' habits? I do not feel that others (smokers) should have to pay extra taxes to provide health care for "smoking related" health problems (as we all know, today everything is blamed on smoking, so how is it determined what is or is not caused by smoking?).

Thank you, pigbrain, for saying most everything I was wanting to say to these other readers that do NOT whatsoever understand the judicial process! Reality is NOT what you see on TV, and what you see on TV is what you are expecting from our law enforcement agencies. Also, about the whole secrecy thing...Have you never heard of FALSE CONFESSIONS from people that were not even related to the crime?!? The idea of keeping certain things secret and out of the eyes/ears of the public is to prevent false confessions. Its the idea that only the perpetrator will know those details, so when s/he mentions that small detail, you know you have the right person. So pretty much, every one of you that feels that this whole case has been "botched" because you don't know every detail, or you worked with so-and-so, and for what ever other reason, you need to do a little research into the judicial system and processes before you jump to your UNEDUCATED conclusions about how things work!!
