Wow, another short, uninformative 4-H fair story.

I am continually disappointed year after year with the coverage that the Janesville Gazette gives the Rock County Fair. Mr. Angus, what an opportunity you are missing to interview some of the most hard working, outstanding youth and their families in this county. Rock County has the largest 4-H program in the state of Wisconsin. Rock County also has one of the largest number of youth participating in leadership roles on the state 4-H level that it has seen in years. For one week out of the year I want to read stories about these outstanding youth, their families and their projects. I'm tired of reading about the everyday news that I can read the other 358 days of the year or in any other paper for that matter. I purchase the Janesville Gazette because it is my hometown paper and I want hometown coverage.
The kids up on that stage Tuesday night in most cases have spent 10-12 years working to get where they were. Their parents have spent 10-12 years taking them to project meetings and community service activities that have benefited many in this county and state. These kids are quite simply the cream of the crop. If you could take a look at their royalty applications you'd be amazed at what these kids have on their resumes.
I thought the coverage of the king and queen in tonight's paper was minimal at best. They deserved to be on the front page...front and center. Your readership deserved to know more about them. Congratulations to both Tom and Julia; those of us who know you know how hard you worked for the honor you received last night. The fact that the Gazette didn't find it worthy to even list the Court of Honor...shame on you. The title "Court of Honor" should have been enough to make you realize that they should have been recognized too. I hope Mr. Angus that you sit down with your staff yet this week or at least before the fair next year and discuss what your newspaper can do to better promote a fair and its youth that are second to none.
A proud Rock County 4-H Parent

I'm not overly surprised by this article. I think Schuler's furniture is beautiful but I refuse to patronize their business. Schuler's purchased and tore down an old barn for my family many years ago. To make a long story short we never got paid for it, so their current financial issues aren't a shock to me.

Put Bessie next to Del Taco, the worst restaurant in Janesville? Are you kidding me? It will take more than a tourist attraction to get me to go into that place again. I went once and I won't go back.
Here's an idea, save Bessie and put her up at the new Rock County Fairgounds that should be developed out on the county farm property!

I'm looking forward to shopping at the new Menards but I will NOT be patronizing the new Del Taco again. I had my first and last meal there earlier this week. Actually I bought two menu items, took bites out of each and threw them away. With grocery and restaurant prices soaring I rarely throw food away but the food was that bad. The portion size was tiny, food quality was extemely poor, and the items were cold and tasteless. Come on, Janesville can we try to get a decent fast food restaurant in this town? How about one of those Long John Silvers/A & W combination restaurants? My kids love both and it would be a welcome change from another taco shop! We actually look for this restaurant in other states when we're traveling.

I'm not sure where danhartung posts went but here is the reply I got back about how the facility was funded at Washington County:
It started with the Washington County Farm Bureau donating $7000 of seed money for a study.
The County bought the site, an Agricultural and Industrial Society (AIS) was formed which built all the buildings except the Pavilion. That was built by the County. To build the rest of the buildings, the AIS applied for and received a 501(c-3) status so they did not have to jump through all the hoops the government has such as only Union Labor and all the bidding processes demanded by State Law. The AIS received a Grant from the County.
The AIS now rents the land under the buildings, and pays rent to the County. It still receives an annual Grant from the County but the rent income is more than the Grant. This Grant decreases every year and eventually should not be needed.
There is now over $30 million into the Fairgrounds and buildings.
For 2008 every weekend is taken in the Pavilion and our new Ziegler Family Center (about 30,000 squre feet still under construction) is already rented out for various functions after our County Fair which is the end of July. The AIS employs a full time staff of about 8 people, plus some summer help. The site is rented out year round for everything from weddings to craft shows, horse shows, etc.
