On Judge strikes down Wis. law limiting union rights

Posted on September 18 at 8:01 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

My mother-in-law is a teacher in a small Wisconsin community. She's been anti-Walker since he started running for office. But, since she's gone back to work this year, she got a raise, her insurance costs went down because they were able to negotiate, and she no longer had to pay her union dues which saved her money. Now she's not sure what she thinks of Walker.

Curious if any other teachers have seen the same thing. Probably not in Janesville if their contract lasts through 2013?

The lady in one of the pictures has a sign that says "Hands off Social Security and Medicare". Both sides agree that if we, in fact, keep our hands off and don't make a change, those programs will bankrupt in the near future. So I don't understand the thinking behind the sign. I would think all voters would agree that changes need to be made - even if you don't agree with the ones Ryan suggests, but something, right?

I find it interesting that most liberals I know are financially conservative in their own lives. Many of them eschew debt and live conservatively within their means, yet they don't vote that way. I know it's a generalization, but it's amazing how often I run into people who live one way but vote the complete opposite, at least when it comes to finances.

poobah, let's stick to this marriage issue. "Marriages provide opportunities not available to unmarried couples." What a bland, meaningless statement. I comprehend it, I just don't see what it has to do with someone's opportunity for financial success.

There are many singles in this country who are rich. Please explain how a person who has the option of getting married has an entrepreneurial advantage over someone who does not have the option to get married.

Hey, whatever makes you feel better about yourself...

So then you would agree that today we all have the same opportunity for financial success?

poobah, what does slavery, marriage laws, or women's suffrage have to do with a person's opportunities for financial success today?

Do you really think the race, sexuality, or gender card are valid in every argument?

In regards to worker's low wages, in this economy the biggest factor has to be supply and demand. There are currently way more workers looking for jobs than there are jobs available. Pay won't increase until those scales are tipped back in favor of the worker.
