On Immigration activists spread word on social media

ax & gambler- Leave it to you to ASSUME that all undocumented workers are Mexican (or Latino for that matter) and leave it to you to make such an ill-informed comment.

You really have an issue with CHILDREN whom arrived here with no fault and no choice of their own? Would your reaction be the same if the gentleman quoted had a German name, or an Asian one?

On Wis. Assembly panel approves junk food stamp bill

Sheila- With all due respect, I don't think that the people that are considering this law as a possibility are really considering what people on assistance 'want'. Their idea is more of what is healthy for people- and children in particular.

I find the whole proposal ridiculous. Aside from the obvious issue of how much this would cost to implement and maintain, I find it obnoxious that our focus be on people who are poor- instead of the huge amount of government waste and big business tax breaks. If we focused our energy on the billions lost to foolishness instead of what our hungry neighbor chooses to eat, we would be far more successful as a country.

On Students from needy families place burden on schools

I am going to venture to say that those of you who 'have a friend who knows someone....' have no first hand information about these families. I worked with the impoverished in Janesville for several years- and NEVER - not ONCE- did I see a mother with a smartphone while her children didn't have food. Yes, I have seen parents buy terrible food for their child, or the child have clothes that didn't fit correctly... But, you are making assumptions that you don't KNOW to be fact. My daughters (12 & 15) have had smartphones for the last 3+ years, but, this is something that their father gets an incredible deal on and keeps them in his plan. We are divorced. If I was impoverished and struggling, you would assume that my kids having those phones is because I am 'wasting' my money. Those that are facing poverty often share cars with other family members. You can't make an assumption by what someone drives or their phone, etc. If you don't know their situation, you simply don't know... And, we all know what happens when you ASSUME.

On Opposition to bill on food stamps for junk food

I think this is silly. Why would we spend money to try and tell others what they should or shouldn't eat? Doesn't our government have enough other bills to worry about that actually matter?

On About those changes in school breakfasts

oldvet- As a parent that has on occassion used the breakfast club for my children when I have had to go to work early or something of that sort, I think you may be unfamiliar with the program. THe program at Roosevelt was great, and didn't serve low-income students. It served all students, and my children would bring in boxes of cereal and milk or bread when they were to go into breakfast club. It contributed to the 'community' feel of it, and, I wanted my kids to learn to always give more than they take in life.

So, my problem is different. I don't want my kids to attend now that it is federally funded...

On Fewer health care options for illegal immigrants

To those of you that state one should come here legally, While I agree with you that it SHOULD be this way, I assume that you are unaware that there are several countries where one can not get a visa to come here legally. This includes the majority of the latin american countries. There are x amount of visas available per country and these countries already have an excess of people here on the visas.

So, the reality is that one must either come illegally or not come at all. When you are leaving a country where homeless, hunger, and crime are rampant- the desire to provide for your loved ones warrants the risk that one must take to arrive here.

While it is easy to understand things from our point of view, have you ever thought about it from theirs?

They don't just hop on a bus and arrive here. They face kidnappers, hunger, and huge danger in their several days in the desert. I have talked to a mother whose newborn baby died on the way and she had to bury her in the desert. I know of 2 men that took turns carrying an elderly man who broke his ankle and would have died if left alone in the desert.

There is no argument that the situation with the undocumented isn't ideal. However, the situation is, in fact, far more complicated than one who hasn't dealt with the issue can understand.

On Feds to pay for breakfast

momof- I agree with you. My children have occassionally gone to breakfast club when I have to go somewhere early, and, I never minded them going because they would bring with them a box of cereal or a gallon of milk, or something - with the idea being that they were contributing more than what they were taking.

I won't be comfortable allowing the kids to attend breakfast club once it becomes a federal program. To me, this is taking the program from being a community centered program with parents and community members chipping in to being a handout.....

Way to destroy a good program.

Education is not a place where one should try to 'cut costs'. I would far prefer that one obtains an education through a grant than that he not obtain an education at all. A society full of uneducated people will not lead us into a brighter future.

Knowing too much has never been a problem, but, knowing too little has proven fatal time and time again.

Sigma--- Interesting. Sounds like the 'active virus' in the shot got you all sick. There is no way I will get this shot, nor will my children. There are far too many cases of exactly what you describe. Glad you got better!

I think the benefits far outweigh the risks. My daughters have had smartphones since they were 10 & 12, and, my younger kids (6 & 8) love their tablets. Educational and fun. And, they can download books and music...
