On Center Ave. blocked for standoff

Posted on July 19 at 3:21 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

People, updates come from the Police. If the police are not giving any details, or updates, what is the Gazette suppose to do about it? Walk right in and interview the guy, and ask him for an update?
.
Use your brains once in a while people.
.
And obviously, if you live in the area, and know what is going on, maybe post something here.

On Ethanol will help fuel us toward energy independence

Posted on July 2 at 2:25 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

This is what I want explained to me: back in the 80's were playing less than $1 gallon for gas. Oil was around $80/barrel. Why now when oil is aroun $60/barrel are we paying almost $3 a gallon? Do not tell me it has anything to do with the war, or aging equipment, or some other ridiculous excuse.
.
I can tell you why. It has to do with greed. The oil companies claim to be hurting, yet they are still posting record profits, EVEN IN THIS ECONOMY!!!
.
I agree we need to find better alternatives to oil. There are better alternatives, but the technology is so new and expensive it cannot be released for public use. Plus, as someone else has put it, oil companies will not allow this technology to be released. Seriously, if we all drove cars that got 100mpg, how long do you think gas prices will be this low?

On Plan gives hope to idled GM plants

Posted on May 27 at 12:09 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

If I was GM, I would take this opportunity to try something new. Retool, refit, rehire the employees, and open this plant. But on the following conditions: a pay rate more reasonable to what you should be paid for building that car ($15/hr minimum to $25/hr maximum), benefit package more reasonable as well, no more pension fund, all retirement funds will be through a 401k, and NO UNION.
.
Now before you pro-GM people out there start commenting. Honestly think about it, do these people work any harder than anyone else doing manual labor in another factory, or construction site? NO. GM workers are the biggest whiners in the world. I wish I could bring home over $1,000 a week for physically working 30 hrs out of a 40-50 hour week.
.
The automakers need to step back and really look at the costs of producing the vehicles. The price the vehicles accordingly so they sell. So that almost everyone has the opportunity to purchase it. NOT just the people making them.

On Jacknifed semi slowing Interstate traffic

Posted on March 26 at 1:47 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

nscott - you do make part of a valid point. The people on the interstate do not remember the rules of the road. You are suppose to move over into the left lane, if possible, to allow entering traffic room to get up to speed and merge onto the highway. I drive the interstate a lot. You would not believe how many people do not move over. Then when they do see you, they act like it was your fault to disrupt their driving.
.
I will not say what state drivers I typically see doing that, but I think we all know. Anyway, people need to brush on their Rules of The Road handbook again. I am not saying I am the best driver, but at least I know what to do on the interstate when it comes to the on/off ramps.

Well my girlfriend just told me that Bourns Automotive is closing June 2010. So we will see how accurate those surveys really are.

On Janesville declares snow emergency

I just like this statement: Police may begin issuing tickets to violators before plowing begins.
.
So in other words you could have a ticket on your car before the plow even comes through. That's the way to be proactive. Let's ticket people even before they do something wrong. "but officer I wasn't speeding." "I know, but I am sure you will later."

On Officers arrest two men on felony drug charges

Posted on December 29 at 10:54 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

There is always "intent to deliver" charges for drug related crimes. The police will charge someone with just about anything and everything related to that crime, because most of those will be dropped when it gets to court. Or the charges will be used to bargain for something else. So the list maybe extensive, but when the case comes to court, a lot of those will be dismissed by then, or dropped in court.

On Running on empty: Workers face future with few benefits

Posted on December 23 at 11:42 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

fatcheck: The wages you speak of include the benefits that are not seen on a paycheck. What most people do not know, is it costs a company a lot to have employees. Not just what is shown on the pay stub. You have other taxes, workman's comp insurance, etc. All this is not seen by the employee. Most people think that what is shown on the pay stub is what it costs the company.
.
As for the economy, it is a ripple effect. Eventually even the most profitable company will feel the effects of this. No company will be immune from it.
.
As for bailing out GM, Ford, and Chrysler, I say NO!!! They need to figure out how to reduce costs. One way is to get rid of pension funds, and switch everything over to 401k's. That $40,000 truck (which is absolutely ridiculous) sitting on the lot is also paying for someone who has been retired for 15 yrs. Why? End pension funding, and make everyone enroll into a 401k or other type of retirement.
.
If I had a business that all of sudden took a turn for worse, because of a bad decision made by me, the government should give me money to save it? NO!!! That is not right. I would have to find ways to turn my business around.

On Running on empty: Workers face future with few benefits

I agree with one thing about unions: They were needed back in the 20's and 30's when the working man was forced to work 60-70 hrs a week and not getting paid for it. But nowadays you hear about so many companies that thrive without a union. They pay their employees well, and give really good benefits.
.
Let me ask you this, does paying a union wage and benefits create a better product? I don't think so. I think if you treat your employee right, you will have a happy employee and produce a good product that people will want to buy.
.
The Toyota counterpart is making about $10 less an hour. They just as good of benefits as the guy at GM. Guess what?? TOYOTA IS NOT UNION!! Unions have been known to be the downfall of many companies. GM, Ford, and Chrysler are examples of that. The unions have put so much into the contracts that the companies cannot afford it. And guess what? Now the employees that the unions have worked so hard to "protect" are now without jobs.
.
So once again, where is the union in all this? "Thanks for the dues every week. Hope to see you again sometime."
