On Milton residents continue to have issues with odors

Posted on April 22 at 8:46 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

I believe the neighbors of the ethanol plant are more concerned with their health than the odor. The odor is just an indication that something is very wrong. I was invited to come out to one of their homes when the wind was blowing their way. The odor was terrible (they have lost the use of their own yards) worse though, was that I could "taste" the smell hours after leaving their home. (I was only there abut 45 minutes.) I don't think we should judge those who complain until we walk in their shoes. I doubt that if our neighbors burnt a pile of tires in their yard for days on end most of us would complain. I also doubt that we could get away with it. As far as the "country smell" that some have mentioned, this may be irritating but not a health hazard. Unlike most of the homes with the "country smell" who moved into a farming area the neighbors of the ethanol plant bought homes in the country before the plant moved in. There home values have plummeted, their health is at risk and their quality of life has been greatly effected because of the plant. Note in the other article on the plant is says that the emissions could cause health problems and cancer in animals. Good luck to those of you fighting for your health and quality of life!!!

On Referendum proponents launch Web site

Sue Gavigan,
Just had to let you and your committee know that there are many of us out here that think you did a great job. So many facts in such a small site. We appreciate the way you separated facts from opinions so the reader can make their own decisions. Including the official Town of Milton records that each fact came from and encouraging us to get them from the town hall proves to us that you have legitimate backup. Unlike Beachsexton, we feel that your opinions as an elected official are valuable. We didn't find anything in your site that was biased - just facts and educated opinions. Keep up the good work. We will be voting "YES" on the referendums on November 4th.

On DNR approves ethanol permit

Thanks to the DNR for listening to the people who live in the area. :-( It is disheartening that the average man has nothing to say against big money. Are we to assume that all violations that did not come from the present RTO have been made right. I would hope (but am not holding my breath) that when the new RTO is installed if there are still violations they will be shut down until they come under compliance in all ways. I don't live by the plant but still consider those who do to be good neighbors.....they have followed the laws that apply to them....now it's time for United Ethanol to do the same.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I, for one, am sick to death of beachsexton knowing EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING. It is unforgivable that someone would be so unkind as to make the statements made in these comments. John Dorn's personal life (be beachsexton correct or not) has nothing to do with the ethanol issue. I know John Dorn casually and a few of his neighbors better. His neighbors are just as frustrated as him - just show it in a different way. No one can be sure how they would react if they had to go through what these people have for the last few years. Before anyone puts too much stock in what beachsexton says please click on her name (in red) and see how many times she has ranted on since January 23, 2008. Pay particular attention to the July 11th response by Sue Gavigan on the Milton Township Police article. Notice that after Sue Gavigan challenged some of beachsexton's "facts", beachsexton "left he building" only to go on to to give her (mis)information on other subjects. I think it's time that we all start making bets on if beachsexton will be running for vice president under McCain or Obama - with all this knowledge we surely need this person in the White House. (Or anywhere else far away from here!) As for the ethanol issue - you go, John and all of your neighbors too - wishing you the best of luck!

On Town set to hold police referendum

Posted on July 15 at 9:38 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Nascar17- There are different statues for a town and a village. For instance, a village has to have a post office - a town doesn't, a village has to have a bussiness district - a town doesn't, a village has to have sewer and water for all reidents -a town doesn't, a village has to provide it's own police protection - a town doesn't. These a just some of the differences. If you notice, the article says "the VILLAGE of Footville, for example, contracts with Rock County to patrol the VILLAGE 100 ADDITIONAL hours a month at the cost of $53,000 a year". They have requested 1,200 hours a year over and above the normal patrolling. Milton Town has no need for that.

Beachsexton Sue Gavigan gave you a chance to "debate" the issue of the Milton Town Police referendum. This is what you said should be done - am anxiously waiting for your reply. Please let all of us know where she "skewed the facts" or "misled us" and where your information comes from to prove your point. If you have talked to her personally since she wrote in please let us know what you found out also. (Love my town and am still looking for that "popular playgroud".)

1919eternal I'm glad that you brought up Tom (Town of Milton's Police Chief). As you stated it is the position not Tom that are on the line. In the next two sentences you go on to say that he would lose the job that he loves. Many of us grew up with Tom and know how he loves police work but don't feel that as taxpayers we have the means to support these double services any longer. I realize in a town as small as ours it is hard to seperate the man from the job but sometimes as adults we have to make tough decisions. Seems this is one of those times. Other than being a full time deputy for the Rock County Sherriff he works for the Rock County Boat Patrol, part-time officer for the City of MIlton and as he has mentioned, cleans the Milton Town Hall all while working 1300 hours (his figure) a year for us. There is plenty of opportunity for off-duty police officers to persue the love of police work but we can no longer afford this double service.

In this article Meyer states that he wants the Town Board to make an educated vote on holding a referendum. I was at the June meeting and he must have forgotten that the board already voted then to hold a referendum in November. For all of you who plan to attend the meeting on Monday night be sure to listen to the secretary's report to see who voted for this. If he truely wanted us to know the facts he would have allowed Sue Gavigan to be on the fact finding committee as he knew she had been working on this for 4 years. Also I don't understand what the fact that the chief of police gets paid for cleaning the town hall got to do with anything about the police department. I will be attending the meeting Monday night and hope many of you will be too. In the mean time I will be out looking for things to do in the "popular playground" that I have missed for the many years I have lived in the Town of Milton.................

On Who would enforce the rules? Town police debate comes down to ordinances

Posted on May 20 at 3:25 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

If you are going to respond to an article please read it carefully before doing so. This is avery important issue to the people in the TOWN of Milton ( it has nothing to do with the CITY of Milton). There is much misleading information in this article. I called the reporter who wrote it and she gave me the address of the property in Mallwood. It is 1316 East Maple Beach Drive. Please drive by and see for yourself how "unsightly"it is. The "dirty moldy leaves in the driveway" are just the leaves left from the fall....the same as many people have at this time of the year (no ordinance violation there). The "snowmobile sitting sideways on the driveway" is a snowmobile parked along their fence (not at all on the driveway). It is not an eyesore. IF this is a violation, then any boats parked in the open on private property for the winter will have to be sent a 30 day notice also. The refrigerator is a real problem...too bad that our chief didn't realize that maybe he should have taken off the doors, laid it down on its doors, faced it towards the garage or secured the door with a chain so children couldn't get into it before leaving the property to write out a 30 DAY NOTICE. Now the children in the area could be in danger for 30 more days. If the chief thinks this is an "unsightly property" he needs to look further to make his job necessary! Also, isn't it curious that there are four picture of the chief and none of this terrible property? I think Sheriff Spoden said it all when he stated the he "is confident that his deputies can handle any calls without additional manpower". It may also interest residents to note that the referendum committee was hand picked by our town chair and at least three of the four people he appointed have already indicated they want to keep our police department. One of them will be moving out of the township soon, only one attends meetings regularly the others seldom, if ever. Doesn't it seem that the comittee should have people representing both side of this debate so that the outcome of their report could be unbiased? And it also seems to make sense that you would pick people who have taken the time to attend board meetings (three of them didn't even bother to be there the night they were appointed). We need to be responsible citizens and check out the facts for ouselves, attned board meetings and let our wishes be known. We need to make the board accountable for their actions. Re-elect those who actually take the time and effort to get the correct facts and get rid of those who don't bother. And, by the way, a big thanks to our Sheriff's Department for the 24/7 protection they give us to keep our township safe!!

On Possible vote could dissolve police department

To me it appears to be a very dark blue - to some I suppose it could appear black. Either way it couldn't be mistaken for the sheriff's gold color.
