Halloween is also the last 2009 day of the season for the Janesville Farmer's Market. Come down to N. Main St. to celebrate the holiday and this year's great vendors while helping local farmers, crafters, and entertainers!
On I'm going to miss the farmers market

THANK YOU to everyone who supported the United Arts Alliance buskers (street performers) this year at the Janesville Farmer's Market! Sadly, we'll be losing young violinist Noah as he moves with his family to Tennessee but watch for the new line-up of even more great performers in 2010. In the meantime, support local arts and artists by attending and participating with the Rock Co. events and activities listed at www.rockcountyarts.com (website newly enhanced and just launched today so watch as much more information is added in the coming days).
On Republican women—hear them roar

It continues to be true that women are their own worst enemy when they continue to support the GOP and its misogynist policies and agendas.
On A golden opportunity to declaw Patriot Act

"The passage of the Patriot Act was an American tragedy.... " No truer words have ever been written. The Patriot Act proved that the 9/11 terrorists "won" initiating destruction the U.S. Constitution by reactionaries from within. It's expiration should not just be allowed but demanded.
On A question of health—and equality

Incredibly ironic that those who are so vehemently against health care reform because they're afraid it may eliminate the ability to make their OWN CHOICES will still be the most adamant to deny allowing WOMEN TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES when it comes to reproductive health care! It's time to abandon and eliminate funding for programs that are proven to NOT work (ie, abstinence-only "education") and move on to the real world with real health care provided equitably for all.

On Parents, board question if Chinese program should be mandatory

Thanks to a handful of parents, Janesville's ugly aethnocentric face is showing again. Education in ANY subject is ALWAYS beneficial. Students who have studied with Gallant know she's an exceptional teacher. Shame on Severson, Sodemann and the Sandra Fischer. The only ones who lose in this current debate? Those students who would have had their lives enriched and their worlds expanded by learning the Chinese language and culture. How very, very sad that not only will they be more limited by unfounded fears of their parents but it's even more disturbing that just a few parents can repeatedly make the school district "lay down and roll over".
On Field renaming upsets family

While I totally agree the City of Janesville should have been notified before any change was made, unless there was some type of contract and understanding with the Damron family in the beginning, this whole issue is ridiculous. There are hundreds of committed donors and dedicated volunteers who have given their hearts, souls, and monies to all types of endeavors, building projects, and organizations that have benefited everyone in Janesville over the decades without expectations of acclaim and notability. They haven't donated and worked just for the prestige but in obscurity out of a simple, selfless altruism that goes far beyond self-serving naming rights. History may forget their names for they're not often wealthy or influential but Janesville will long benefit from their often unrecognized contributions and we should all be very grateful for such dedication to the well-being of the community.
On Health care on council agenda—again

Thank you, City Council members, who have not yielded to rampant fear-mongering; who have the wisdom to know every citizen is at risk with the existing system; who have the foresight to declare the obvious - the current "sickness" care system just is NOT adequate for millions. While such a resolution is "non-binding", it is an honest assessment that health care reform is crucial to Janesville's and the nation's well-being. It is a message national leadership needs to hear unequivocally and often.
