On Freedom From Religion seeks freedom from Day of Prayer

Posted on October 4 at 11:06 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

Madman 1961 you asked why we need a National Day of Prayer, I am going to ask you this. Why do we need a Martin Luther day, National Night Out, Day of Silence, Gay Pride Day?
National Day of Prayer is the one and only day of the year that ALL religions can do something together as one and put differences aside.

On Favre joins to the Jet set

What ticks me off the most is people who before the end of season last year were die hard packer fans and Favre fans who now are bad mouthing both because of what happened. Let me ask you this, how many times in your life did you make a decision to do something and then questioned yourself if you did the right thing or were ready to move on with your decision?
Favre is no different than most of us, if this was nothing more than just money he would have taken the money and ran, but it wasn't. All Favre wants to do is play football nothing more, but someone decided that they did not want him to play football at least not in Green Bay. As someone wrote, we do not know exactly what was said behind closed door's and we can only assume what was said or talked about and we may never know what was exactly said. Favre's life since he was a kid has always evolved around football and can understand how hard that has to be to walk away from and I know that he is not the only sport star who has retired and has come back to play. In time we will know if the Packer organization made a mistake or not but until then it will be a wait and see situation.

On Favre flies under radar in Green Bay

First I would like to say to everyone who is talking badly about Favre, you do not know what is going through his head nor are you in his shoes. Since this story broke it has been very one sided and have only heard comment from McCarthy and Thompson. We have yet heard from Favre himself and what his thought are too all of this. Favre supposedly did make a comment to ESPN last night saying that there has been a lot of damage done that he cannot forgive. He further said that a lot of stuff has been said and story's told that just are not true. Now I have been following this story from the beggining and remember McCarthy saying that he had been in touch with Favre since he retired because Favre was not sure if he made the right decision and McCarthy made the comment saying that the option was there if Favre changed his mind and wanted to come out of retirement. My gut feeling is saying that there is more going on than what they want us to know and in time we will eventually find out what that is. And if I remember correctly all Favre requested from the Packers was to be released from his contract, probably so if he decided to be reinstated he then was not tied down and could go wherever he wanted without making waves but the Packers refused. One last thing, Reggie White retired only to have second thoughts and asked to be reinstated which he was and played 1 more year with the Panther's yet after his death when he was entered into the hall of fame he was entered as a Packer. And yes I know, Favre has done this the last 3-4 seasons threatening retirement but I also understand especially with his wife having cancer and not knowing what her prognosis was going to be or the outcome.

On Officials hope room tax will boost tourism

Ms. Schultz, what does Edgerton have to promote? Bar's, Restaurants and empty tobacco factory? In order to promote something you have to have something to promote in the first place. We have a nice auditorium that I feel could be utilized better than it is. Most of the stuff they have at the auditorium is geared towards the older folks and nothing for the younger ones. Last year they had country legend Roy Clark perform there, but again it was geared towards older people. Why can't the city counsel spend the money to get quality performer's that would draw different age groups. Why not have popular plays there that would run for a week. It takes money to make money and right now Edgerton has nothing to offer so why promote what it does not have.

On Quarterback Brett Favre will be back, local Packer fans believe

Posted on July 11 at 8:21 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

So some of you think that Brett is an egomaniac and is selfish. If I recall, how many times in Brett's career with the Packers has he taken a volunteer pay cut to allow the team to get a quality player under the cap on the team? How many times have you seen Brett demand a raise and threaten to quit if he does not get one? Zero times. How many times have you seen Brett strut around acting like he is God's gift to football, none that I have ever seen. In fact Brett was the first one to take the blame when they lost a game. Brett plays football for the love of the sport pure and simple. Football is his life and has been since he was a kid coached by his Father. If Brett was selfish and an egomaniac he would have left the Packers a long time ago and gone to another team.

On Permitting underage children to drink at home is a question of parenting, not the law

Posted on July 10 at 8:40 a.m. ( Suggest removal )

As I read this article I was reminded of a similar article I read about 8-10 years after the legal drinking age was changed to 21 and how that article talked about binge drinking and the increase of underage drinking that was occurring. Now when I graduated in 79 the drinking age was 18 and I admit that I was one who would sneak into the bars at 17 to drink. It not so much about going out drinking as much as it was the thrill of not getting caught. Of course that wore off quickly once I turned 18. At 18 you are considered an adult in the governments eye's and no longer need your parents permission. If an 18 year old can get married, have children, enter the military, have their own apartment, have credit cards and debts then an 18year old is adult enough to be able to drink and take on the responsibility of such.
The problem here, the government made a mistake when they changed the legal drinking age back to 21 and has realized the problem it has caused and are now looking for a scapegoat. As a parent would I allow my 18-21 year old drink at home, yes I would because I would much rather have my child drink at home where they are safe and where it can be controlled rather than drinking behind my back and getting themselves into trouble. Would I allow them to go to a drinking party, no. Do I teach them responsibility, yes and are taught what the consequence will be if caught. Some of you will think that I am a horrible person for allowing an 18-21 year old drink, but that is your opinion. The hard fact truth your 18 year old is going to do what they want and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it and if you think your 18-21 year old child has not drank underage at one time or another then I also have a bridge to sell you.

On Edgerton reverses course

I live in downtown Edgerton and can tell you first hand that the Fulton Street condo/Storefront project was a stupid idea to begin with. Who in their right mind would ever buy a condo that has a busy train track right behind it and know first hand that a train comes through between 1-1:30 AM every morning. You have a Bar kiddie corner from it who has live music every Saturday night that can be heard 3 blocks away and noisy people going to and from the bars. The project not only took public parking away as well as tenant parking but also took away space for the farmers market and other vendors who used it for special occasions like Tobacco Days. Now it's an unfinished eye sore and no one knows when it will be completed.
Now I heard that there is a tattoo Parlor going in where the old Al Beyers was or in the now closed fax/printer repair place was. Just what downtown needs. Crossroads Pizza was supposed to rent the vacant old Liquidator store but was told they cannot because of the zoning and then heard they were looking into renting Hoowies Bar but have seen nothing in the works there.
Fox Point is closed and who knows if they are going to re-open. If Edgerton ever wants downtown businesses to flourish, they need to think outside the box and think of something that will attract visitors and make people want to come and visit Edgerton.

On Were we right to rescue children from polygamous sect?

I looked this up and is very interesting.

Plural marriage and the law of placing

The FLDS Church teaches the doctrine of plural marriage, which states that a man having multiple wives is ordained by God and is a requirement for a man to receive the highest form of salvation. It is generally believed in the church that a man should have a minimum of three wives to fulfill this requirement. Connected with this doctrine is the concept that wives are required to be subordinate to their husbands.

The church currently practices the law of placing, whereby a young woman of marriageable age is assigned a husband by revelation from God to the leader of the church, who is regarded as a prophet. The prophet elects to take and give wives to and from men according to their worthiness.
Child marriage usually refers to two separate social phenomena which are practiced in some societies. The first and more widespread practice is that of marrying a young child (generally defined as below the age of fifteen) to an adult. In practice, it is almost always a young girl married to a man.

The second practice is a form of arranged marriage in which the parents of two children from different families arrange a future marriage. In this practice, the individuals who become betrothed often do not meet one another until the wedding ceremony, which occurs when they are both of a marriageable age. Which age this is differs by local custom. In most practicing cultures, this age is at or after the onset of puberty. This is the case in the FLDS church.
Not only are young girls at risk but so are young boys.
Lost Boys
It has been reported that the FLDS Church has recently excommunicated over 400 teenage boys, some as young as 13, for offenses such as dating and listening to rock music. Former members claim that the real reason for these excommunications is that there are not enough women for each male to receive three or more wives. Six such teenage boys have filed a conspiracy lawsuit against Jeffs and Sam Barlow, a former Mohave County deputy sheriff and close associate of Jeffs, for a "systematic excommunication" of young men to reduce competition for wives.
Critics claim that some members of the church are violating laws (because polygamy is illegal in the United States) when they participate in polygamy. Critics claim that incest and sexual abuse of children are prevalent among church members.
This is not the only thing that has other worried, there are health issues as well among the FDLS members.
Birth defects.
The Colorado City/Hildale area has the world's highest incidence of fumarase deficiency, an extremely rare genetic condition which causes severe mental retardation. Geneticists attribute this to the prevalence of cousin marriage between descendants of two of the town's founders, Joseph Smith Jessup and John Yeates Barlow.

I have heard of drive through windows and drive through car washes, but a drive through bathroom? Now there's a new concept.
