On Council continues to trim budget: Zero percent increase within reach

Lisa - Move on and get over it already. The bike tunnel has been discussed ad nauseam. It is not a "want" but a need related to safety.

On How far do you think the trade for pitcher C.C. Sabathia will take the Brewers this year?

Just had to make another post on this poll. CC was a great trade for the Brewers and he showed it today!

On Downtown BID declared dead

janesvillean - Just to clarify, there are not 82 other cities with BIDs. There are only around 50. There are 82 BIDs in the state of Wisconsin, and Milwaukee has 29 of them. Also, your comment wondering "about how many small *business* owners were overruled, as it were, by the *property* owners they lease from" really does not matter. The property owners are the ones who would have been responsible for paying the additional taxes. Not the leasees.

dongo – Your responses are just completely wrong. First, I never said “we will all remember the day when "Lady Whatever" played in Janesville.” Reread my post. I said “years from now people could very well be reminiscing, ‘remember when Lady Antebellum came to the Rock County 4-H fair!’" You wrongly took it to the extreme. Second, there were mainstream acts at the fair this year. Corbin Bleu is on a very popular program on Disney and if you would actually take the time to read the Gazette article on this very page, Lady Antebellum is the most recent winner of the Academy of Country Music’s top new vocal group of the year award (sounds to me like a pretty big deal). Third, why are you even trying to compare the Dane County fair with the Rock County fair? Dane County’s population is approximately three times that of Rock County’s (463,826 v. 159,153) so they have a much larger audience to draw from. Also, one look at the entertainers from this year’s Dane County fair reveals the following “mainstream” in your own words, acts: The Winn Family Thrill Show, ShenaniGuns Comedy Wild West Show, and Sea Lion Splash. How about instead of constantly complaining, you find something useful to do.

I would like to thank the fair board for all the hard work they do booking the entertainment. The entertainers are not cheap and the fair board is obviously doing the best they can. All one has to do is read the many articles the Gazette has had this past week to note the many rising entertainers the fair has booked. While there was not a large audience last night, it was still a very good show. This is an up-and-coming group and years from now people could very well be reminiscing, "remember when Lady Antebellum came to the Rock County 4-H fair!" People need to stop complaining about how the fair only has country music. This is the fair, not a music festival. For those complaining out there, all of the following are within a 1.5 hour drive from Janesville which have a wide variety of music generes come and perform: Rivervest in Beloit, Summerfest in Milwaukee, Kohl Center and Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Alpine Valley off I43, and numerous venues south of the border in Illinois. It should be noted all of these will cost a whole lot more then the entertainment we get each year at the fair. Once again, thanks to the fair board for booking quality entertainment again this year.

On Residents oppose planned bike tunnel

lakenndey - my comments were definitely not intended to be personal attacks so please do not read them this way. You seem to be the main opponent to the tunnel on the boards with some common sense though so I have been responding to your posts. That being stated, you just do not seem to understand the need for the tunnel and only see it as a large expenditure the taxpayers cannot afford and you seem to be the one not understanding the other sides view. As has been discussed by myself and others, the cost of this project, spread over the entire taxbase is minimal. I have read the other options. A bridge would be over twice as much, going to the corner of Wright and Milwaukee poses many hazards (not to mention there would be many who would just continue to cross where the current crossing is), and speed bumps and stop lights do not necessarily stop the traffic. The tunnel will take people out of the path of traffic. You also continually bring up if a tunnel is built here, all the other intersections will need one. This has not been proposed at all. Additionally, the Wright Rd location up from Ruger is completly different as there are only two lanes of traffic. To your comment regarding there are those being asked to pay for the tunnel who will never use it, I encourage them to get out there and use it, if possible. It is really a great part of this city. There are many places where my tax dollars go which I choose not to, or cannot, use (ex. golf courses, senior center). I however understand these are important parts of the city and do not have any issues with my tax dollars supporting them. In reading your posts, you do not seem to understand we cannot pick to have our individual tax dollars only support what we use.

lakennedy – we have heard your complaints enough on this topic. Find something else to complain about. You say the only residents who spoke against the tunnel last night were against it. How many were there? I’ll tell you. There were less than 10. 10 residents out of a city of over 60,000 came to the meeting to speak against the tunnel. Not exactly a strong argument to have this vote overturned. Also, why would residents who were in favor of the tunnel need to come to the meeting? It has already passed and we are happy. For what it is worth, take a look at the WCLO poll Councilmember Brunner spoke about last night. An overwhelming majority want the tunnel. I do have to thank you for finally realizing the cost for us taxpayers is not $670,000 but rather only $435,000. However, you seem like a smart enough woman, think about how ridiculous a referendum would be for this amount. If we had a referendum for every expenditure at this cost, there would be lots of delays and many projects which need to go through would not get passed because everyone in the city does not use everything.

On City council still divided over Milwaukee Street bike tunnel

lakennedy – once again you prove just how ignorant and uneducated you are. For starters, this would not be defeated 10-1. Also, I was unaware you were being asked to fund the tunnel entirely yourself. How much do you really think this project is going to cost each taxpayer? I do not have the exact taxpayer statistics handy but lets just use the following figures for arguments sake: your $435,000 amount (which is high) divided by 15,000 taxpayers. This equates to $29 or $0.08 per day over the period of one year. Sounds like a pretty good investment to advance the city and make it a safer place to live and enjoy. I am not sure if anyone has reported being hit by a car here but I certainly hope you do not think we only need to do things when something bad happens. Read others comments. People do look both ways before crossing, however vehicles speed up to the crossing once pedestrians have entered. This city needs to be PROACTIVE instead of REACTVIE as you are suggesting. Also, we will absolutely be losing money if we do not build the tunnel now. The grant will be lost. Do some research before making these false claims.

Bassinthumb (and anyone else who is going to compare the Milwaukee St. crossing to Racine St.) - these are completely different crossings. The Racine St. crossing has a stop light, is much wider, and the sight lines are much different. There is no need whatsoever for a tunnel at Racine St. and one would not be proposed. While I would agree with you many vehicles do pull past the stop lines, they do come to a complete stop and it is safe to go in front, past them and through the intersection. I also ride through this intersection multiple times per week and even if a vehicle pulls past the stop line, you do not have to ride so far out you are riding in front of oncoming traffic.

tjncj – The yellow lights at the firehouse would only flash when an ambulance or fire truck is heading out so this should not really cause too much confusion.

lakennedy – I do not even know where to begin with your post. This project WILL NOT cost the taxpayers $670,000. There is a grant for $235,000 to offset the cost. Additionally, the city has already set aside in excess of $100,000 for the construction. If the tunnel is not built now, the grant will be lost, the costs will rise, and we will all end up paying more. Your comment on not crossing in front of speeding vehicles is just insulting. If you had ever used the trail you would realize it takes some people awhile to cross the intersection and there may not be vehicles present when one begins to cross but they can come speeding up. Yes, drivers need to take some responsibility and follow the law and yield to pedestrians but the fact of the matter is, a lot do not. People need to understand, this tunnel is needed and will be cheaper now than in the future.

ChsMkr has it right on. This is absolutely about safety. Anyone who says cars always yield to pedestrians and bikers is lying. I use the trail multiple times per week and the majority of the time, at least one vehicle will go speeding right through the flashing yellow lights. Many times, I see the driver talking on a cell phone and not paying attention at all. Not getting this tunnel passed and built will not be good for this city. What do all the complainers need to see happen? A kid killed trying to cross? That is what is bound to happen without a tunnel and it will really be sad.
