A jolly day on the beat
This is Dylan. He is writing his name in my notebook so I got the spelling correct. I thought that was very thoughtful.
And this is Dylan and officer Benjamin Thompson. They were one of several pairs of officers and happy kids at Walmart this afternoon for the Janesville Police Department's annual Shop with a Cop event.
It's not every day you see a dozen police officers in uniform pushing carts and trying to keep up with second-graders carrying gift cards. I think at this moment, Dylan is trying not to make an inappropriate face when officer Thompson suggested Dylan use the last 60 cents on his gift card to buy vegetables. Grown ups are hilarious.
I rode along with the department for a story I'm working on about the skill set required to be an officer. The ability to work well with kids and their families is towards the top of the list.

Who does pay for this service? Apparently Janesville can afford to take a dozen officers away from there regular duties?
Maybe a different "feel good story" would be parents spending time with their children over the holiday season and understanding the meaning of family instead of paid city employees shopping at Walmart with children as babysitters with a badge.

Like mom used to always say, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." I think this is a great feel good story, so pooh on those negative comments. I wish you had explained more about this program such as how the children are selected & who pays for it because I actually had to google it to find out more. I agree with emac that the police are a special breed that often go unappreciated.

Good thing the grammar police were not there or you would be spending your Christmas in jail.

My Father and Grandfather were both police officers. They are a special breed of individual. All to often under appreciated for the amount of compassion they have for not only children, but for anyone needing their assistance. I am very proud to carry on their name.
