Fourth Ward homicide plea
The reaction to the guilty plea in the Fourth Ward homicide case has varied.
Kyle E. Hicke, 38, pleaded guilty to first-degree intentional homicide stemming from the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend.
In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dismissed related charges of first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm by a felon and attempting to flee or elude an officer.
Some people are angry Hicke could be eligible for parole.
Others wish Wisconsin had the death penalty.
Others want Hicke to spend his life in prison.
What do you think Hicke deserves?

The whole debate on capital punishment has been discussed ad nauseum. Just wanted to point out a couple items. 1) In my previous post I was stating an opinion in answer to a question. 2) To the question of whether capital punishment deters crime, it does in the case of the person being punished thusly.
All that being said, the problem with capital punishment is that it is carried out by the state.

In some cases, and for some people, life imprisonment could be, or at least should be, worse than death. But it should be imprisonment without any frills or the privilege of everyday comforts. Just a lot of hard time to think about the lives that were ruined because of the crime that was committed. Perhaps a quick, painless death would be more welcome by some if imprisonment was bad enough.

ljs64- "The FACT OF THE MATTER is that the homicide occurred in the 4TH WARD. You want the Gazette to report the facts. They just did."
Actually the crime occurred in the 16th ward.

As far as this goes: "An eye for an eye, [a tooth for a tooth]" appears in the Old Testament more than once. Jesus Christ, speaking at the Sermon on the Mount, rejected this line of thinking. "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'. But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. If anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." Matthew 5:38-39
.
In a more modern context, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose birthday we celebrate this coming week, once wrote "The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind."
.
As ljs64 notes, it is hypocritical to decry violence by wishing violence on another. It is certainly not a foundation for any sort of true justice. It is simply asking the state to take the burden of guilt off us for wanting revenge, and calling it justice.
.
There is no evidence that capital punishment has any deterrent effect on crime. States that have the death penalty do not have lower crime rates for the affected crimes. Nor is imprisonment by itself a deterrent. Recent studies in criminology have shown that far more important than its severity is how quickly and certainly a punishment is meted out. Those who believe they will be caught and punished, regardless of the extent of the punishment, are less likely to commit crime.
.
I have no problem with putting a murderer away in prison for the rest of his natural life. (It's certainly cheaper than litigating an execution, which can cost millions of dollars. California is one state that can't afford its death row.) I don't put any imagined or desired outcome on this punishment. A crime committed in the heat of passion as this one was is not one where the criminal is thinking very seriously about the consequences. They have, however, become unsafe to society and need to be incarcerated for that reason alone.
.
Nothing we do now will bring the victim back or achieve anything like satisfying justice for the family. We do have a system of courts and punishments that we should apply firmly and fairly.

I guess we better make our jail system better then. Get some private rooms, king sized beds, big screen TVs for all, steak and lobster for all if good behavior. That will deter crime. I think something should be done differently to deter it. It seems to be raging and people don't seem to care they'll be in prison for the rest of their lives for killing somebody. It seems death penalty isn't working either.

Ignorance runs wild in the Rock County area.
Wish VIOLENCE on one who committed VIOLENCE.
Barbaric, Ignorant thinking. And we wonder why high tech businesses do not set up shop in this area. No one with any sense to fill those positions.

Have a PPV event, put him in a pit with whoever wants to do whatever they want to him.
All proceeds go to the victims' families.

Why is it that this newspaper reports this crime as the in Fourth Ward? Why aren't other crimes listed by their wards? Besides, I thought the area in question was no longer the Fourth Ward.
