Enhancing the Web sites

By KYLE GEISSLER   Tuesday, June 9, 2009 - 9:14 a.m.

The Internet is more than just Web sites. Fast-moving changes in the digital media are opening up new doors for us at the Janesville Gazette, WCLO, and WJVL.

Perhaps you’ve noticed some of the changes. Some enhancements may be harder to detect.

As we continuously update our family of Web sites and their new media features, we want to keep you on top of how you can best use them. So, we decided to set up a blog.

Some of the topics you can expect us to cover include RSS feeds, social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) use of audio and video and ways users can share their own content. We will also highlight interesting tidbits from the Internet we think will enhance your use of our digital services.

I believe it’s an exciting time for the news and information business. Never before have we had so many tools for informing and engaging the public.

Let’s put them to work.

Really wish the Gazette would have a message board set up like Madison.com has. These 'blog comments' setup kinda, how should I say it, sucks.

Also how about just removing the offending posts (or banning the offender if they are a constant problem with racist remarks and other extremely offensive remarks) instead of "disabling comments by staff".

Another 'pet peeve' is when you click a story link it varies on which gazette 'site' it ends up on. Gazette, WCLO, WJVL. Just keep all news on the Gazette side.

Took my three days to figure out why those logos were backward. Sheesh.

And yet you guys still haven't learned how to use those tools. I come here about a 1/3 of what I used to when you guys actually had a decent site. Now it's watered down and when it is updated the stories that people want to read are few and far between. It's sad I can get better local coverage from Madison sites than here. I know this is all an effort to increase subscriptions, but you guys need to face the facts, Due to all these new "tools" you praise it's killing newsprint. The sooner you realize that and adapt the sooner people might care that your on Twitter.

Most people could care less about what anyone is doing currently and posting to Twitter. I would actually consider Twitter if Stan was engaged there as I generally enjoy his commentary and no non-sense approach to getting to the bottom of an issue. I would rather listen to him in a medium outside of AM that gets poor reception in many places in Rock County due to the stations very low wattage.

I would highly suggest a user submitted news and photographs section. Look at its popularity elsewhere.

I HATE how you guys use Twitter. You post 10 things at a time (slight exaggeration) and then move on to the next affiliate to post 10 more things. It clogs up the local feed. In fact, that's reminded me. Next time I see postings like that, I'm just going to block the Gazette, WCLO, WJVL, etc.
.
I don't think Twitter or even Facebook is where you need to concentrate to gain readers. You need to focus on content and advertising. I HATE how the Janesville Gazette put the national news BEHIND the sports in that section. What's really more important here?
.
And let's be honest here. Who on Twitter really cares about what Stan Milam is talking about at any given time? If we want to listen to him, we'll tune our AM radios to 1230.
