A matter of taste
It started with mashed potatoes.
Specifically, it started in the radio newsroom Monday with a discussion about the void in my life now that I've eaten my leftover mashed potatoes. WCLO's Stan Stricker was incredulous.
"Really? Mashed potatoes?"
I told him they have cream cheese, sour cream, onion salt and other deliciousness included. As he stood there making faces, I explained that it was my grandmother's recipe. It's the same grandmother who made peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. Apparently that sandwich crossed some sort of line.
Stan says it's not like the fried egg and onion sandwich enjoyed by an older generation.
Cooked onion? Raw onion.
"Ick," I say.
We both agree on the perfection of a tomato sandwich on a summer day. Tomatoes fresh from the garden, with just mayo on white bread. I'm salivating thinking about it. We had a moment.
WCLO's Rose Stricker came in and told me about her poached egg and cheese sandwiches, preferably on raisin bread. She says it's just like an Egg McMuffin or McGriddle. We had discussed a similar topic on her blog.
A while ago, I introduced the Strickers to peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches. Mmmm...hazelnut frosting.
What sorts of sandwiches do you create that are misunderstood?
We could go into the whole range of foods farm kids eat that's never sold in grocery stores, but let's stick to wholesome headcheese sandwiches and such.

First let me say that my paternal grandmother has a very strange idea of nutrition, which might explain why I'm not what you'd call "svelte."
Whenever she and my grandfather would babysit me, she would make me peanut butter and sugar sandwiches for lunch. Yes, you heard that right - PEANUT BUTTER AND SUGAR. And we're not talking powdered sugar here ... we're talking granulated sugar. First she'd spread peanut butter on one slice of bread, then she'd pour sugar on it and put a second slice on to try and keep it in place.
Unfortunately, the sugar would often try to sneak out of the sides, so she'd always make me eat it over the sink to catch the drop-off.
Surprisingly, my teeth never fell out and I didn't wind up with juvenile diabetes.

well I also liked, as a teen, eating macaroni with western dresing. I tried other french dressings but it wasn't the same, it has to be western! I think I'll try it again, I haven't eaten it in a long time!!

The Dept of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection just issued this news release specifically warning AGAINST tiger meat:

If you grind it yourself and use it right away, it is safest. Rinse the meat with cold water before grinding. Bacteria tend to collect on the surface of cuts of meat. When you grind meat, you are increasing the surface exponentially. Large commercial ground meat producers add ice to the process to increase production. Sometimes the water in this ice is contaminated and that is where real trouble begins.

My favorites include a peanutbutter and sliced cheese sandwich or else a peanut butter and frito sandwich, but either way, you have to have some dorito's and sour cream and onion dip with it.

My dad tells of walking to the one-room school with his lunch staple of lard sandwiches (yuck). Sounds completely unhealthy, though he's approaching 80.
He did get me hooked on liverwurst and mayo, however.
Peanut butter and banana sounds intriguing. Might have to try the radish sandwich; I know folks who enjoy them.
Calf brains? Peanut butter and mayo? Yuck.

Does anyone have a recipe for pizza burgers as good as the ones we had in school?

If you're looking for Nutella, www.nutellausa.com has a store locator. On a trip to California, we went to a crepes shop that had a whole wall of giant Nutella jars. That was my introduction to it and I've been addicted ever since.

I don't do this one anymore because of health concerns that no one cared about in the 70s and 80s (e coli and the like!) but I LOVE raw seasoned beef (worcestshire, celery and onion salt, garlic, etc) with a slice of raw sweet onion on soft white bread or crackers! What I wouldn't give to have the guts to eat raw meat again...my cat loved them too!(minus the onion)
My mom and I used to love Braunschweiger and Miracle Whip (NOT mayo) with a crisp piece of lettuce - crumbles of old potato chips- on cheap white bread, AND my favorite side dish with it was Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter cereal (similar to Breakfast Club chick mentioned earlier!)

peanut butter, bananas, and pickle sandwich. YUM :) I also eat ketchup on scrambled eggs (the only way I will eat them unless they are fried with mayo on toasted bread). And ketchup on mac-n-cheese. Grosses my husband out everytime!
.
And, sounds odd (but not disgusting)... cottage cheese and Ruffle's potato chips. They have to be Ruffle's (or atleast wavy chips...not thin regular ol' potato chips).
.
The most disgusting thing I've ever tasted? MEATLOAF. I knew I was in trouble if we were having meatloaf for dinner! My poor dog probably had more meatloaf snuck to her than all of the dogs on our block combined!

Let's see, there's my heart attack waiting to happen known as "the good morning burger," in which I take a hamburger, scrambled eggs, bacon, syrup, and throw them between a cinnamon bread-flavored bagel. Delicious, but deadly.
I've done the peanut butter and nutella sandwich, and it was the heaviest thing ever. There was a brick in my gut. A delicious delicious brick.
Speaking of nutella, I also make "sex on a waffle," where you take a Belgian waffle, top with peanut butter, nutella, whip cream, and both maple and chocolate syrup. Amazing.

There was a guy in Milwaukee a while back who had a similar problem with his refrigerator after a wild night out on the town. What? Too soon? I am reminded of the movie where Ally Sheedy takes a bologna sandwich, removes the sliced meat and throws it aside, and proceeds to prepare a sandwich with Captain Crunch (crunched) and Pixie Stix sprinkles.

If in Monroe stop down to Baumgartners for a Limburger cheese sandwich. If that isn't enough, try the "ancient" Swiss, it'll put hair on your chest. Also this time of year Lefse with butter and sugar is always a treat.

'Tis the season for turkey, mayo and cranberry sauce, along with as much Asian hot sauce as you can handle. Substitute horseradish or any other source of hotness you prefer. Substitute jam, preserves, etc., only if you're desperate and out of cranberry. *** Don't try this, or any other sandwich of substance, with bread of the Wonder variety.
