Sweetness straight from the field
Mmmm…fresh-picked strawberries!
Nothing beats it.
With strong winds blowing across the lake up at my family cottage this weekend, we ventured out for other activities, including strawberry picking. We always go to Tomahawk Berry Farm near Heafford Junction, and Saturday proved to be perfect timing for juicy, sweet strawberries.
We picked a heaping lug for $20. Now we have fresh strawberries to eat and plenty of bags to freeze or make jam with.
Never mind the pesticides; I think I ate a berry for every few that I picked. Well, not quite, but they were so delicious!
Strawberry picking can be a great family activity for an afternoon. I still remember the days growing up when my grandparents would take my sister and me out to the strawberry fields.
I’m guessing, however, that fields around here are probably done picking for the season, or very near it. The fields we were in had about another week of picking left, farmers said, but that’s almost four hours north of here where the growing season is always a couple weeks later.
Anyone know if fields around here are still open for picking? Where do you usually go to pick strawberries?

Hmmm, good question.
Some friends and I would always pick some when we made our treks over to Kenosha to bet the dog races. There is a HUGE patch just before you come into Kenosha, on hwy 14. That was always open well into July, and even August; as I recall. I think they staggered their planting times, because you see people out there picking all summer time when you drive past.
