Online dating. Eek.

Dating is hard.

Especially since I can be a bit of a hermit when I'm not at work. So at my youngest sister's suggestion, I created an account at okcupid.com. She met her boyfriend there, and they get along fine. It's actually an entertaining website. You take tests and browse profiles. Best of all, it's free. I just don't think I should have to pay for that sort of thing.

I've met up with people I've met on myspace, so okcupid didn't seem to be a big deal, except that it's an Actual Dating Site. I got my share of strange emails. Guys in their 50s love me. Someone else actually sent me an email that said, "Want to get naked and party?" Um, no. One of the first people I talked to is Gary. He's a funny guy. I liked his emails. So after I found out his full name and looked him up on ccap I decided we could hang out. Apparently he looked me up on ccap first, and sneakily found my work website without knowing my real name. This freaked me out a little, since I had a stalker around Valentine's. That is, someone I didn't know who started emailing me on facebook, then on Valentine's emailed my work account (which went to our general newsroom acct) and also at home. Too much.

Being a reporter, and a reporter who watches too much Law & Order SVU, I told friends where I would be and what time I'd be going to the movie. I emailed my sisters Gary's info. I think the Mark Jensen trial was still in my mind.

It turns out it was the first time Gary went on a date with someone from okcupid, too. It was a good time. I made sure there would be a second date before blogging about the first one. I'm not going to go into specifics. Stop being so voyeuristic, people!

But you can hear us discuss our okcupid experience here

Sounds like you two made a connection. I think you two will be very happy together.

The audio was pretty cool. I'll have to pull out my trusty old Postal Service CD again--haven't listened to that in a long time. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I especially liked the audio on this blog, it made me feel as if I was a member going through the "online dating experience". I totally agree that one shouldnt have to pay for the online dating service. Who knows.....manybe things work out for you and Harry Gary. Hopefully there is a follow up blog (with audio) ;)

Amazingly, I know quite a few people who've had luck meeting people online. In my own humble opinion, meeting someone online is one thing, but dating them online is another. If you meet for the first time via keyboard and then make plans to go out in person, I think that's great. Make that Internet work for you.
