Murphy's Law of car repairs

By ANN MARIE AMES ( Contact )   Thursday, March 27, 2008 - 1:31 p.m.

It's just inevitable.

I had such responsible plans for my tax return this year--pay off a few bills, stash a little away for a rainy day.

But the minute the return hit the bank, a wheel bearing went out in my car.

Of course it did.

At least we have our rebate checks to look forward to. I plan to put that toward a plane ticket and a bridesmaid dress, so at least that will be fun!

So, if your car weren't going to break down and you didn't have to pay your mortgage, what fun thing would you spend a little money on???

I feel everyone's pain. I think I got everything fixed now, but I've spent (well...I had lots of help) about $1,600 on my car in the past month. Mergh.

This, of course, is in addition to the 800 other bills I've got.

I'm going to Minnesota to visit family next weekend, but that's about all I can afford for vacation...

I just finished and e-filed my taxes. I plan to pay off a few bills, then put the rest in the bank. But knowing Murphy's Law is always in motion, it may end up being used to move or to buy a cheap more energy efficient car.

I'm forced to have my ball joints and tie rods done tomorrow, since without my car I can't get to work. Which means several bills will be late the next few months, in turn having to pay several late fees for the late bills and having to spend more money on that too! It's a sad scary cycle that never ends, I guess it's bad all over. Good Luck to everyone!

Just for the record, my car had a lot more problems than I realized. Of course it did.

I would love to ride a bike to work! The problem is we never know when we're going to get sent off to cover a fire or an accident or an alien landing or something. So I need to have a car available.

Or maybe that's just an excuse.

But the dog and I did take the car to the garage and walk back. And I saw some crocuses in my neighbor's yard!!!

I just got two front wheel bearings this week myself. The *fun* I'm having right now is not hearing the whirring noise up front, and not having every warning light on my dash glaring me in the face. Also, my anti-lock brakes work again! Happy, happy, happy$$$

So some days my van would start, on other days it wouldn't. I thought maybe the key was bad. I had a new key made for $65 and the key didn't work. My anti-theft system was messed up and would cost over $600 to fix, but they couldn't guarantee it would really be fixed so I traded the darn thing in. Luckily I was in good enough shape to afford a newer vehicle. What a pain in the butt. Really makes me want an old car. A 68 Camaro would be nice, but the 4 kids wouldn't fit ;)

My tax return went to a kick butt new pc that my Dad built for me. I also paid off some bills. This next check is going towards filling in our in-ground swimming pool and we're planting a garden on top of it. It's time to start planning for a bleak future and growing our own food by using heirloom seeds. We would to go to Portland, OR for vacation but we just can't swing it this year :( Bills, bills, bills :(

I'm being irresponsible with my rebate. I'm going on vacation to San Francisco, and before the check even gets here. I'm just asking for trouble...

I'm pretty sure I'll never stop spending money to fix my car. I was going to put my economic stimulus check toward a weekend in New York City, but that's been put on the back burner. I have too many bills to spend money on a vacation in good conscience.

Fix one thing and another thing breaks. So typical with Dodge products during the Daimler era. I knew I should had stuck with Nissan. Over 200,000 trouble free miles, other than regular maintanance on my old 92 Hardbody.

This dodge just freaking stinks. went through 5 heater cores between 37K and 90K. Blew the rack last summer, random misfires, front wheel bearings need replacing on a regular basis (both sides twice since I owned it), camshaft position sensors, crank position sensors, map, tps, 2 water pumps, 1 power steering pump, front calipers, rear end pinion seal, front bumper's plastic type paint peeled off, clear coat is eroding and a bunch else. Ran fine and reliable UNTIL the warranty ran out when it hit 36K. Sad thing is, I'm not alone. Hit up a bunch of the dodge forums and dakota/durango forums and just see how much issues these things have. The rebate may be enough extra for me to use as a downpayment on a new Frontier.

I hope to use my tax return to go on a vacation. And pay off my credit card, but that's not fun at all. :(

There's plenty of time for something else to go wrong with your car before that check gets here.

Oh. Doesn't that just figure?

With extra money, I'd like to replace my older appliances with more energy efficient ones. Then I could save money after spending it!
