Yes or no to 'Sex'?

By ADAM BERGSTROM   Friday, May 30, 2008 - 8:56 a.m.

So, unless you've been living under a rock for the last six months, you've undoubtedly heard that HBO's popular "Sex and the City" series has been made into a feature film. That film opens today.

Not to stereotype, but it's a film that's heavily marketed to women. I think we all can agree on that.

But I'm curious to know how many women in the area are planning on seeing it. And I'm curious to know how many men in the area are planning on going with them. Does Rock County mirror the masses when it comes to a movie like this?

I've heard opinions from all over the map. I'm planning on seeing it with friends tonight, I do believe. Not to stereotype again, but being a gay man, it's no big surprise that I've got plenty of both girl and guy friends who can't wait to see it. But I also know plenty of guys who will be in hiding to avoid being dragged by their girlfriends. And I know at least a couple of girls who couldn't care less if they see it or not.

I've heard people talk about how they're excited for the release, because the HBO series was a bit of escapism for them (with themes of love and sex, shopping, expensive shoes, etc.), and I've heard people talk about how the show is shallow and materialistic (because of those very same themes).

I don't really see it either way. I watched the series back when it first started. I was in high school and lived at home and had HBO. It was a compelling storyline, and that's why I was interested. And that's why I'm seeing the movie.

Plus, I love New York. And I've always had a mini-crush on Kristin Davis.

So. What do you think? And are you going to see the movie?

Men won't mind going to the movie; it has several graphic sex scenes that will keep them awake.

I went with three of my friends to the movie. It was a good tear jerker, but had funny momments too. I can't wait for it to come out on video. Everyone can relate to similar situations of love lost and won.

Sarah Jessica Parker is not attractive and I can't stand to look at her. Eat a sandwich!

I've never watched Sex and the City. No reason to see the movie.

Oh, and a "Sopranos" movie would be equally awesome. (As long as Pauly Walnuts has a prominent role.) "Six Feet Under" would be great, too.

lakennedy: I always got compared to Miranda, and I'd like to think it's because we're both smart, but it's probably more because we're both neurotic, sarcastic and red-headed. I don't know who my favorite is. I do know living with Charlotte would slowly kill me, though.

w8nc: LOL.

coast2coast: You have to SEE "Sex" to GET sex. Nice.

Yes, I'm going! I can relate to so many of the episodes and I'm not at all ashamed to admit it. I am, after all, a woman, and very much like the characters in the show, sans the money and luxurious apartments and clothes, of course.

w8nc, I totally agree! I watched football with partners and found that I LOVE the game! I even have been known to watch cage fighting.

I would prefer to go with the girls, though, to see Sex and the City. I know that if I went with a guy, he'd be complaining the entire time...who wants to deal with THAT?!

;)

Why do men complain about watching SATC. If they paid attention, they might learn something :0)

My friend started watching it and was telling me about it. Her and some of her other friends were having Martini parties while watching past season DVD's. So I had to find out what the big deal was about this show. I didn't have HBO, so I started renting the DVD at the Library and the movie store. After the first couple episodes, I was hooked. I had to watch them in order though, so if the Library was out of season 2, I wouldn't dare check out 3. During the last episode, my friend called me in the middle of it only to find me in tears, I told her I had to call her back when I was done watching it. I didn't even want to pause it for the phone conversation. So needless to say, I'm going this weekend with the girls.

Bergstrom, you should have conducted this poll: Who's your favorite character from SATC and why?

Mine--Samantha, for sure!

Hmm, good point on tickets, lakennedy. I'm hoping between theatres in Janesville, Beloit, Rockford and Madison, there's got to be space somewhere.

Agreed on "Entourage." Personally, what I've seen of the show so far makes me want to pull my hair out. But, that's no different than someone else not liking SATC. So whatever any of you like is fine by me. :-)

I hope I can get a ticket to see it!! I completely agree that it is marketed towards women, but I also think that their (semi) new series "Entourage" is heavily geared towards men--a "Sex And The City" with a penis, if you will.

SATC has a story line that keeps you interested, the comedy in it is great, it also has real life situations in it, its not all fantasy or an "escape from reality" show. So, yup, will definetly be seeing the movie.

I think all men should follow this link and print out their very own "Get out of SATC" certificate:

Nope. I won't step 50 feet from a theater this weekend.
