Puzzling pastimes
People do the strangest things.
Some have hobbies that others don't understand. I got to thinking about this when the Madison City Council expanded its chicken ordinance. Although I feel like I talk about it a lot, it still surprises some people that I consider raising chickens one of my favorite hobbies. I went to a poultry show this past weekend, just to see what kinds of breeds were out there, and if we wanted any breeding stock for the next show season. I told one of my friends and he said, "Wow. That sounds like a lot of fun...for you." I could hear him shaking his head and maybe even rolling his eyes.
I've also experienced this sort of thing with ex-boyfriends. There was a time when I knew how to play Yu-Gi-Oh because one ex was really into it and wanted an opponent in the game. Another ex warned me that he wouldn't answer his phone at a certain time because he was playing his interactive NASCAR video game, complete with miniature steering wheel and gas pedal.
What other sorts of hobbies do people have that are misunderstood?

Hey now; I did once play in grade school.
Are you really suggesting that I would intentionally throw a few games?? HAHAHA.
Quit your winning. Wasn't like I didn't let you in on it, and BAIL YOU OUT from your disaster on the court! :-)

yeah yeah; it wasn't me going into central park and saying.
I once played chess when I was in grade school.
I think I still remember how to play..Doesn't that knight move like an L shape?.
Toss a few games for a couple $$'s, and then say you play better if the stakes are higher.
Now who is the hustler here?

That's pretty cool. I did not even know anyone even played chess in Janesville anymore! Any idea what the format is (time controls, ext) is? Unfortunately I have other engagements this weekend. Been a while since I have played long in a long time control tournament. I most just play blitz chess (3-10 minute time controls) with people all over the world.

Someone I vaguely knew in high school contacted my dad about trapping raccoons on the family farm. I talked to my dad about it today and he said, "Oh, it's just his hobby." Apparently he checks the traps daily, and skins and cleans the raccoons. No word on whether he now has a few stylish hats.

When my dad retired, Mom made the mistake of telling us kids that he enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles. At Christmas, we all gave him puzzles. Nothing but puzzles.
Oddly, he gave up that hobby quickly... I think he just wanted better presents the next year.

3 on 3 basketball for me. Misunderstood because it's not just a bunch of thug brothers from the hood who play like a lot think.
And Don't allow that HUSSLER kiowamohican anywhere near a chess board! The story I could tell you about that crazy #@&(%$. If it wasn't for ME that boy would be like Hoffa, thought to be somewhere in the ny/nj area if ya know what I mean.

I'm a big chess player as a hobby. Don't play as much as I use to like I did when I played in many tournaments all over the country when I was in school. It's pretty misunderstood though; as most think of chess players as the real dorky/geeky types. Which I suppose to some sense that is true, but most chess players are pretty dynamic people and not what you'd expect once you get to know them.

ktaustin, interesting about the gasses. Hanging upside down is also great for muscles and relieving pressure on the spine. Chiropractors endorse it. As for refrigerators, I hang a good distance from mine, despite my impressive collection of magnets.

Actually hanging upside down periodically can be a good thing, although daily might be overkill. Depending on what kind of environment you work in, there are some very heavy gases that you could breath in, but since you only exhale something like 80% of your lung volume, those heavy gases can remain trapped in your lungs unless you breath upside down for a minute. I think freon is one such gas (used in old refrigerators).

I collect sports pennants. Primarily DODGERS pennants but I also have quite a few BADGERS pennants, including at least one from every Rose Bowl appearance, and a smattering of PACKERS, including the 1967 World Championship vs KC, CELTICS and BREWERS pennants as well. They've basically taken over the rec room walls. My wife won't allow me to hang them anywhere else in the house.

pack, I like the ones that are actually shaped like objects, like a car, telephone, or bowl of beans. I had one shaped like a rectangle that fell into my paper shredder. Now it looks like the Madonna. Don't tell anyone, the last thing I need is a pilgrimage.

I carve decorative duck decoys and enter contests with them. May seem kind of odd to those that aren't attracted to the outdoors, nature or waterfowling, but I do pretty well at the world championships.

I’ve collected diecast 1/64th scale cars since I was a boy. My collection includes mostly Matchbox and Hotwheels. I have a room in my basement I built just to display them. I always get the preverbal, “oh (long pause) so you collect toy cars,” response from people. However, I look at it two ways. For one it’s a connection to my childhood that reminds me of dirt road cities in the backyard and doing to the local five and dime every week with my allowance to pick out a new car, basically nothing but fun. Secondly, it allows me to purchase cars I could never afford to buy in real scale. Even Jay Leno can’t say that he has thirty 67 Camaros or 57 Chevys. Collecting diecast is harmless fun and relatively inexpensive if kept under control. I’ve got several thousand, but it’s taken me nearly thirty years to build up my collection. At a dollar a piece that’s not all the expensive stretched out over such a long period.

Not only do I like to tap dance (I'm not sure if that's considered nerdy or awesome!), I also like to knit. My boyfriend used to make fun of me for it, until I started making him a blanket. Now he gets excited everyting I pick up my needles and tells me to knit faster!
In my mind, HE'S the nerdy one. He's constantly playing World of Warcraft on his big screened computer (I've stopped him from hooking it up to our 50 inch TV). He schedules his activities AROUND it and has set games that he plays against his friends.
...those boys and their games...haha!
