Party at the gym

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Friday, January 2, 2009 - 1:57 p.m.

I'm sort of dreading going to the gym this afternoon.

Not because I can't find the motivation to work out, but because it's Jan. 2. Which means everyone who made a New Year's resolution yesterday to exercise more will be there, too.

If you are one of those people, that's great. I'm not at all trying to say you shouldn't be there. Instead, I challenge you to keep up your resolution all year. It's just funny, though, fighting the crowds at work-out facilities in January. The same thing happened in college, but also around March when everyone was trying to get in bikini-shape in a matter of weeks for spring break. After spring break, the place returned to normal again.

After a busy holiday season, I admit I got out of my usual work-out routine and didn't make it to the gym as often as I wanted to. The scale subsequently has suffered. So I'll be back there today, along with the rest of the world, to start working off that holiday weight gain.

My best advice--find a class or routine that you enjoy and exercise with a friend. If you know you have to meet someone there, you'll be much less likely to succumb to the couch. What motivates you to work out?

anytime fitness is open 24hrs and are staffed during certain hours of the day. they give you a key to swipe to access the building. they also have necklaces that you can wear if you work out alone and pushing the button will immediately dial 911. There is no steam room. they have 2 tanning beds.

Well, a chili cookoff might be OK in the winter but I avoid them in the summer.

Yes gazettefan, she (he?) types well. But, I'm still wondering where the chili cookoff is because I really like to attend them...whether they are a big drunken affair or the family friendly kind.

Warm...I am also an "elderly" person, I got a senior discount at Kohl's just last week. That does not give me a "discount" in thinking or expressing my thoughts clearly.
If you go back to Gilly's Jan. 6 post, you will see that Gilly was lamenting the fact that if (some) chili cookoff (somewhere) was moved, it would become a non-alcohol, family event. Elderly folks usually like those kind of events.
That doesn't sound like an elderly person to me.
By the way, I wish my grandparents were still alive, but unfortunately, they passed away many, many years ago.
I always respect age, and wisdom, but sometimes have a difficult time respecting some yahoo spouting off when they do not know what they are talking about.

1. Read the blog and comments before making your "space cadet" comments.
2. What chili cookoff? In what town? And what gym?
3. What are you talking about?

Well, OK. You have to wear the Kevlar chaps, though. Hehe.

Wow, someone actually posted a comment ripping on someone who exercises. Way to go NoSoupForYou (sarcasm). And by the way, SpongeBob is thinking about his wife and kids. His kids won't have a dad that dies early from a heart attack and his wife probably isn't repulsed by the site of him nude.

Best time to go to the gym:

Early morning
Later evening (after 7:30 or so it dies down)

NoSoupForYou- The sweatshirt was a Christmas gift, the shorts are my favorites from high school and my wife and kids are my #1 fans. My biggest motivation is to never end up looking like that guy pictured in the gazette back in November who shot that 10 point buck in Buffalo County. Now that guy could use a salad.

When the weather breaks, a good hiking workout is the woods of the Devil's Staircase (a segment of the Ice Age Trail). It's a little over a half mile long. Doing round-trips two or three times is a great convinient workout. It's hilly and has several stairways that help make it cardio vascular -great for strenthening legs. Very scenic too.

For those who really want to rough it, snow shoeing the DS is great too. At some points the snow shoes will have to come off though. It's as differnt world there and within the city limits.

SpongeBob, I have seen your type, running down the street in your basketball shorts with your oversized sweatshirt listening to your little ipod while your wife and kids are at home wondering "why daddy runs out of the house evey night"....maybe you should take some advice from wwr1961 and put your wife and kids first.

Haven't been keeping up with my blog reading, apparently. I go to Anytime Fitness on W Court. I am told it is the only gym in town with the "treadclimbers" you see on the television ads. I usually go after midnight. It's not very busy then, and it fits in my work schedule.

There was one incident where I called police. A teen came running up to me in the parking lot saying he'd been mugged.
But other than that, no problems with the 24-hour gym. :)

One of the trainers is in a dart league on Wednesdays at Main St, if you want a second opinion...

Ohh, that's tempting, sannio. Thanks for the offer. While I'm quite experienced running a splitter (and I'm not even kidding), I'll only help if I get to run the chainsaw. :)

Gina - If you want to beat the rush, I'm going to start getting firewood ready for next year if you'd like to help. You can be in the great outdoors with the slush inching it's way toward your toes. You can run the splitter. I'll run the chainsaw, if you don't mind. What they say is true: Wood warms you twice.

people think i'm crazy, but i work out at 5am during the week with my friend/coworker/neighbor. it's pretty close to our apartments, so that helps. i used to try going after work, but i usually didn't have the time or motivation. the hardest part about working out early is getting my butt out of bed. there have been times where neither of us wanted to go, but both thought we couldn't let the other down. we got in the car, and it was too late to turn back!
-----
it is pretty helpful to have a 24 hr gym...i used to go to curves, and while i liked the atmosphere and everything, they had weird hours.
-----
maybe you should ask beth about anytime fitness...she's a member!

I work out with my daughter at the club and last night we decided to go at 5:30. You guessed it, we couldn't even get on a machine!! It was packed. I guess we will stick to our 6am thing from now on untill those newbies give up come February! But I really hope they don't give up, it's good for them! GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

localboy-Excuses,excuses. It's too easy to find reasons why NOT to exercise. You just need to sacrifice a little time each day. In your case, instead of sitting in front of the computer torturing us with your comments you could do some sit-ups instead. Then as time goes by you could maybe mix in some push-ups. Before you know it you've got yourself a beach body, sell your computer for a tanning bed and the rest of us have been saved from your blogging.....everybody wins!!!

fschultz- I do not know if they have a steam room...but I think in the interest of scientific research and professional journalism, you should get your boss to spring for a membership so you can go check it out. And just for accuracy, you should take one of the ladies with so that you get the female viewpoint on the place...might I suggest Kayla since she was wishing for a workout buddy?
But as thediplomat says, "no muffin tops". :)

If I read this blog correctly...Kayla, Gina and Stacy are all looking for workout buddies.

Hey, how about all three of you go together. You could pick a different gym in Jville to try each week. You could run from the Gzette building to the gym for that extra "burn".

The trip to the Y would be easy, but the run to Black Bridge Road may be tough.....

How about Anytime Fitness on W Court Street? Surprised no one knows about it. http://www.clubsanytime.com/janesvillewi...
And no I do not have any affiliation with the business, not even as a customer. Trust me. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not frequent a gym...not even the first couple weeks of the new year. :)

Does anyone know if there is a 24-hour gym in the Janesville? I've written about this one in Evansville: http://www.gazettextra.com/weblogs/e-lif.... And the management in Whitewater is considering making that facility open 24-hours: http://www.gazettextra.com/news/2008/dec...

Frank - I agree. Years ago, my schedule required me to be at work by 5:00am. Many times I would have liked to be at the gym at 4:00 and go right to work. Nobody was open then. My nights were also filled with other committments, and 4am was the best for me. Many times I was only able to get to the RAC after 5:00p, and that was the busiest times. When you get up at 4am, your day is done by 8-9p, so after 5p did not work out well for me.

Best motivator: The promise of relaxing in the steam room afterward.
==============
Worst thing about Janesville options for working out: Limited hours. I don't know if this is true, but someone told me that in Madison, clubs are open 24/7, and they're cheaper. Maybe there's a niche for someone to open a rival to the Janesville Athletic Club/Riverfront and YMCA during off hours.

Sometimes the worst part isn't the lines to use equipment, it is the people that still think they can wear their old workout gear. No muffin tops this year please...

Good advice Gina, as an avid Gym member at UWM's Klotsche during college, I was always amazed at the amount of people who showed up two weeks before spring break attempting to shed 8 months of laziness. The only way to do it, is to keep a schedule and do things you enjoy.

I don't have any motivation to work out, other than it has been a very long time habit. It just seems normal. Kids now a days don't have the physical habits that we had when I was a kid.

My "workout buddy" stopped going to the gym months ago...

Anyhow, Gina, I know just what you mean about it getting so crowded around New Year's. It seemed to have started last week; guess people were getting a jump on their resolutions. I have to laugh, even when I'm annoyed that the machine I want is always taken. It'll be back to normal in February.
