"Candy is delicious food, eat some every day!"

"Candy is delicious food, eat some every day!" So sing the animated cowboys during intermission at the Highway 18 Drive In Theatre. Cartoon astronauts (in ships that look remarkably like city buses) blast off into outer space.

In a world where communities are banning Happy Meals, it's reassuring that Saturday night people loaded up their cars for dinner and a show just outside of Jefferson.

They were there for the candy, for the playground equipment, and to show off their Buzz Lightyear pajamas.

While playing frisbee and singing along to Buddy Holly is good, wholesome fun, I'm sure the double feature of Despicable Me and Toy Story 3 helped pack em in.

It was like a bubble of cheerfulness, where you could leave the fast-paced world behind. (Especially, as my boyfriend grumbled, since the wi-fi wasn't working.)

You didn't have to protect yourselves from the evils of Happy Meals. Just mosquitoes. And possibly the 1950s advertising, aimed at both children and adults.

"I really like the soft drinks here! They taste as good as lager beer!"

Oh, and here's the link so you can get your 1950s on: http://www.highway18.com/

Well duh! I don't need a dumb old advertisement to tell me to eat candy everyday!
