School days, school days

By Stacy Vogel ( Contact )   August 19, 2008 - 11:37 a.m.

It's back-to-school time in the Vogel-Davis apartment.

Not for the kids (we don't have any). For the adults.

My husband, Kyle, is starting graduate school next month at UW-Milwaukee. We're going to Milwaukee tomorrow to get his student ID, buy his books and figure out where his classes are. (He only has class two nights a week, and he'll stay overnight, so the commute won't be too bad.)

It's weird, going to back to school as an adult (or being married to someone doing that). When Kyle went to the graduate school open house, he brought his wife (me). Most of the prospective students brought their parents.

Since he's been accepted, we've gotten a deluge of credit card offers addressed to Kyle and his parents. I guess some things never change.

Kyle's foray into graduate school has inspired me to do some learning of my own. I've signed up for a Web site design online course through UW-Rock County.

I imagine Kyle and I aren't the only adults returning or thinking about returning to school, what with the layoffs going on in Janesville lately. As Frank Schultz has reported, Blackhawk Technical College and UW-Rock County are reporting big jumps in enrollment. I wonder if we'll see that trend continue in coming years.
