Gas stations, circuses and sloppy joes

By Stacy Vogel ( Contact )   June 2, 2008 - 12:05 p.m.

My colleague, Frank Schultz, recently left a catalogue of Wisconsin Historical Society Press books on my desk because he thought I would enjoy looking through it.

"I wanted to buy about half the books in there," he told me.

Me too, Frank. Who knew you could write such interesting-sounding books about the Dairy State?Highlights include:

-"Fill'er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations."

"Apple Betty and Sloppy Joe: Stirring up the Past with Family Recipes and Stories."

-"Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters."

-"Ringlingville USA: The Stupendous Story of Seven Siblings and Their Stunning Circus Success."

-"They Came to Bowl: How Milwaukee Became America's Tenpin Capital."

There are also books about Wisconsin military history, Harley-Davidson, Fighting Bob La Follette and (my editor will especially appreciate this) a history of deer hunting in Wisconsin. Click here for more information about the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, and happy shopping!
