My shameful secret

I have a shameful confession to make. Hopefully it won't get me fired.
I have never read "Rascal."
Now, this might not seem like a big deal. But I cover Edgerton, and Sterling North, author of "Rascal" and "So Dear to My Heart," is the city's favorite son. (I think he might be even more popular than Steve Stricker.)
But before my Edgerton sources vow never to speak to me again, let me say that my ignorance is about to change.
Wednesday, I covered a visit from Japanese tourists to the Sterling North Home. "Rascal" was made into a wildly successful anime there 30 years ago, and the cartoon remains popular to this day. The visitors were so thrilled to see the real-life home of Sterling and Rascal, I couldn't help but be inspired. I picked up a copy of the book from the library last night and plan to read it this weekend.
To read a copy of the story, check here. Make sure to check out the wonderful photos from our intern, Matt Wisniewski.

I just want to let everyone know that I finished the book last night, so I am no longer a Rascal ignoramus :)

Well, it is a fair-sized book, but it isn't heavy reading either. Just the thing for a muggy summer Saturday huddling near the air conditioner!

In Milton in sixth grade, we read the book and took a field trip over to the Sterling North museum. Rascal was a pretty good book for that age level; I've had a soft spot for raccoons ever since.

As the saying goes, “Honesty is the best policy.” I think it is understandable that with the amount of reading someone in your line of work has to do, that you can’t read everything. The other fitting old saying would be “Better late than never.”
