Celebrating your local library
A calendar at my mom's house informed me yesterday that this is National Library Week.
That got me thinking about how much local libraries offer the community, especially during the down economy.
Any regular reader of this blog knows I spend quite a bit of time at Janesville's Hedberg Public Library. I like to go there when I need some quiet time to escape the world. My husband likes to go there to study. And of course, I love checking out books and movies.
People who lost jobs recently will find a wealth of resources there, especially if they don't have the Internet at home. The library offers a whole Job Resource Center, including occasional job-seeker labs.
Just last week, my friend Beth and I were trying to decide what books to bring to the Janesville School District's Co-operation Read project. (Volunteers will read to every class in the district Friday.) She stopped at the library, and lo and behold, it offers an entire display devoted to the event. A staff member there also had some helpful tips for her.
Speaking of libraries, the Beloit Public Library soon will celebrate the grand opening of its new facility at 605 Eclipse Boulevard. An open house will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25, with a ribbon cutting at 10:30. Regular library service resumes there Monday, April 27.

I suggest you read "Warriors Don't Cry" by Melba Patillo Beals. It's non-fiction but it reads like a fiction novel. I guess because most of us just can't imagine...

Christina's Book Club, which celebrated it's 10th yr in 2008, also enjoys the Hedberg, Edgerton, Jefferson, and Fort Atkinson Libraries. They have also been able to provide us with the books needed for our 9 members (ages ranging from 73 to 30 yrs of age!). These are all wonderful facilities (the Jefferson library reminds me of what the Janesville Library when I was a little girl).

Local libraries are the best resources a community has. The strength of the local library is a direct reflection on the intelligence of a community. I for one, couldn't be more proud of Sarah and Diane at my library! Orfordville Library rocks!! It is my favorite part of town.

I do so enjoy the library.
I will be spending more time in the library's youth section this week because I've been switched from reading to a high school class to a middle school class for Co-Operation Read. So, if anyone has suggestions for read-aloud selections for middle schoolers, I'd be glad to hear it!
