Share the gift

One of the best things about books, in my opinion, is sharing them with others.

The Janesville School District is offering anyone the chance to share their favorite books with children in April for its Co-Operation Read project. It's hoping to find one volunteer for each class in the district, for a total of 560.

I'm excited to sign up, but I'm even more excited to pick a book to read. Should I read "Winnie-the-Pooh," "The Lorax," "The Secret Garden"? Or maybe I'll be asked to read to older children. How about "Anne of Green Gables," "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" or "The Giver"?

Check the Janesville School District Web site for more info. Donna Behn, director of instructional services, says you can mail, fax or e-mail (dbehn@janesville.k12.wi.us) the form in or call her at 743-5146.

So, what book will you bring?

The Giver is a gift I give 5th graders for their birthday! (well, the ones I am close to, not ALL 5th graders!) and I always suggest their parents read it with them. GREAT Book for thought process!

Wonderful new children's book to share: Woolbur by by Leslie Helakoski... Woolbur's list of Do's and Don'ts:
DO express yourself creatively…DON'T worry if you weave your forelock into a pot holder!
DO march to your own beat…DON'T worry when Maa and Paa tell you to stay with the herd!
DO be bold and brave…DON'T be afraid to BE YOURSELF!

The teachers used to read to us at Harrison Elementary. The two stories that have stuck with me are "A Wrinkle in Time", and "Flowers for Algernon". I'll also never forget the little magazine we got once in awhile called "Junior Scholastic". It really started me off on my "age of enlightenment". Pods are cool, too. Now I go there to vote.

Would it be wrong to read the chapter of Harry Potter "Half Blood Prince" where *that thing* happens on the astronomy tower so anyone who hasn't read the books will know what's coming in the upcoming movie?

WOW! What a great thing to do! Can you share any book with them? I loved Anne of Green Gables and Little house series. I think the kids should be exposed to what we read in school or on our own, that way they get different generations of exposure. It could also give them a second look at reading since lots of kids say they don't like to read. I'm going to call!

I'm not sure what I would read to younger kids. Maybe "The Story of Ferdinand". I might wander around the children's section of the library before I choose. One of my favorite books of all time is "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok. I read it in high school.

Also, it's important to note, the deadline to sign up for the school district program is March 17.

When I heard Donna on the Stan Milam Show, I made a mental note to remember to sign up for this. What a great project! I'm not sure what book I would read. I have some favorites from when I was younger -- "Where the Wild Things Are," "A Wrinkle in Time," and "The Dead Poets Society."
And "The Giver" is a phenomenal book, by the way.
