'Big Read' bonanza

By STACY VOGEL   Thursday, March 19, 2009 - 4:41 p.m.

Are you ready for the Big Read?

What's that, you say?

Check out the Gazette's Kicks entertainment section today for a story about the area's first-ever Big Read, sort of like a community-wide book club. (You can't get Kicks online, so I guess you'll just have to read it the old-fashioned way.)

The book this year is "To Kill a Mockingbird," Harper Lee's classic and one of my favorites. Where else can you get a book about growing up, racism, justice, single parenthood and Alabama during the Depression all rolled into one?

Even better, the organizers have planned all kinds of fun activities for April, including book readings, a film screening and even a "Mockingbird calling contest."

But wait, there's more. You can get a free copy of the book -- yes, I said FREE -- from various libraries Wednesday, April 1. So you have no excuse!

April is coming up fast. Better start reading now!

I am a big fan. So much so, that when I had goldfish a couple years ago I named them Jem and Scout. And I might name my next pet Atticus. Or Henry Gondorf, depending on its personality. ;)

Yes - just stop in at your local library and grab a Mockingbird Passport. Or better yet, they'll be showing, for FREE, the 1962 movie at the Geneva Theatre in downtown Lake Geneva on Saturday, April 11th at 2PM and 7PM. The calendar lists all kinds of free family and adult events in April.
