Twilight talks

By STACY VOGEL ( Contact )   Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - 8:26 p.m.

I'm still resisting the mass-culture pull of the "Twilight" series, but from what I understand of the series' fans, an event at UW-Rock County next month should be right up their alley.

Fans can discuss love, relationships and which actor is cutest (well, that last one is just my assumption) at the "Team Edward or Team Jacob?" workshop scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, one week before the movie based on the second book comes out.

You can read the press release below. Meanwhile, someone who has read the series explain to me: What's the appeal? And more importantly, is it really as good as "Harry Potter"?

Fans who can’t wait for the release of the movie “New Moon” can have a chance to “talk Twilight” at UW-Rock County on Friday, November 13. The Office of Continuing Education is offering a two-hour workshop entitled “Team Edward or Team Jacob? New Moon & What it Means to Be in a Relationship” starting at 7 p.m. The workshop, led by Tricia Clasen, Ph.D., associate professor of communications and theatre arts at UW-Rock County, will let participants delve deeper into the relationships presented in the popular “Twilight” series of books by Stephenie Meyer.

Dr. Clasen will lead a discussion of how the Twilight series has influenced readers’ thoughts about relationships and allow participants to critically examine the positive and negative messages about love through the lens of interpersonal communication theory.

The workshop is open to adults, high school students and middle school students at a cost of $7. To register, call (608) 758-6565 ext. 360 or visit http://www.peopleware.net/index.cfm?siteId=526&eventDisp=FY10.

I've read both the Potter and Twilight series...I prefer Potter hands down.

I could barely get through the first Twilight movie...Kristen Stewart's character truly nauseates me. She continuously whines and never smiles...

The books are excellent! I have read both Harry Potter and the Twilight series. They both suck you in and I highly recommend them. I do prefer the books over the movie though. You should check them out :-)

Stacy - Have you ever heard of/read the book series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, by Rick Riordan? A movie of the first book, The Lightning Thief, is being directed by Chris Columbus, who directed some of the Harry Potter movies. Seems like a popular book series, and wonder if they are worth a read.
