Comma sense

By STACY VOGEL ( Contact )   Monday, September 14, 2009 - 5:12 p.m.

Usually, I roll my eyes and hit "delete" when I get random press releases with no relation to my beat or this area.

But I had to share the one I got today.

It seems National Punctuation Day is Sept. 24, which just happens to be my birthday. (It's also F. Scott Fitzgerald's birthday, in case you were wondering.)

Now, before you yawn and switch to a blog about dating fiascos or Benjamin Franklin, note this: The people behind this so-called holiday are holding a "National Punctuation Day Baking Contest."

That's right, you could win a "box of non-edible NPD goodies" by baking a cookie, cake or bread loaf in the shape of a punctuation mark.

I have to hand it to this group for its creative approach. And for the following effort to tie the event into recent news: "There's an epidemic of poor punctuation in the United States, much like the swine flu. It's too bad there's no vaccine to prevent it."

If that isn't exciting enough for you, just remember that this Friday is National Cheeseburger Day. Now there's a holiday I can get behind.

Would a comma by any other name punctuate as sweetly?
===========
To punctuate, or not to punctuate, that is the question.
