Violence is not the answer.....or maybe it is
OK, some small rodent has been digging in my garden.
I think it's a rodent, anyway.
It's digging round holes about 4 inches deep all over the place. It doesn't bury anything, and it's clear that it's not living in the holes, so what's the deal?
Random digging for digging's sake?
Some kind of pathological condition that only afflicts rodents?
An effort by the the tall man to reduce turnip productivity?
I'd like to set out a live trap, but I don't know what to bait to use. If it is, indeed, the tall man, the best bait would be tator tots.
I know moles like to eat grubs, but I don't think we have any grubs in the pantry.
It's not raccoons, because they're more serious eaters.
Any ideas?

It's the Garden Fairy, preparing the soil for planting bulbs, maybe?

I don't know what would dig holes like you describe. If it were ground squirrels there would be tunnels.

FYI, chipmunks live above ground, have black/white stripes and have a fluffy tail that often stands upright (like a squirrel).
Ground squirrels have a narrower tail that usually goes straight out behind them and both stripes and spots.

I tried to live with the ground squirrels in my yard, but they were taking over. I started trapping them and caught 15!

It's probably a chipmunk. They are harmless and very cute. It's like having hamsters live in your yard. They are friendly little guys. The holes do no harm.
We should seek to live in harmony with our woodland creatures. When we seek to control our environment, it just screws it up more - not to mention bad karma.
Just because your neighbors do something, doesn't mean you should, so go with your heart. When it comes to animals, people do mean and stupid things. Don't be one of them.

It is sort of like a gopher, but a bit different in appearance. goodgle it and you can see some pics. We use to have lots of them, but got rid of them the way I described.

I love the "Rodenator". That would get those 13-stripers in my lawn. Think it's legal in Janesville?

sounds like a 13 stripe ground squirle. to help get rid of them humanely, try sticking a lit mamoth smoke bomb down a hole, we get ours at the fireworks stand every year, I suppose on of the year round fireworks stores should have them too. Just make sure they are the big mamoth ones. Work like a charm ! you will see smoke rise from wherever the other holes are, then we ususally fill in the holes so we don't step in them. Works great for us.
