Mean about green: Ash borer madness

By CATHERINE IDZERDA ( Contact )   Friday, June 29, 2012 - 7:44 p.m.

Busy week at the Gazette and in the garden.

Emerald ash borer arrived, and we all scrambled to get information into the paper that would be informative—without totally freaking people out. Of course, there’s no way to say, “Janesville could lose as many as 30,000 trees,” without freaking people out.

City officials seemed the least freaked out. When the news first came out, they told us they couldn’t comment until they had spoken to the DNR.

Why? I forgot what answer they gave, but it made me want to roll my eyes. I’m not allowed to say sarcastic things to public officials. It’s a good thing, too. Waken the dormant smarty pants in my soul, and there wouldn’t be enough asbestos suits to go around.

Sorry, forgot myself there.

Beans are doing beautifully. The Tall Man has been assiduous in his watering duties.

BIG reminder: On Monday, Mike Maddox, UW Extension horticulture educator will be holding two Q & A sessions regarding emerald ash borer. The first runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m.; the second from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Both session will be held in the second floor conference room of the Rock County Courthouse. Mike will offer the rational, non-panicked approach to EAB.

Whatever you do, don’t awaken his inner smart aleck. He makes me look like Aunt Bea.

On my desk this week:

You cant be sarcastic to public officials? FYI - No one likes a fake reporter.

And for the Q & A sessions, if people can read this blog im sure they can use google which will have real answers, not made up ones to keep people calm.
