Mayor to seek reelection

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Wednesday, December 19, 2007 - 2:09 p.m.

If you haven’t heard enough about the presidential election that’s nearly a year away, then start thinking local. City elections are coming in April and will include election for mayor, four city council seats and judge.

According to city clerk Judy Walton, the election looks like this so far based on papers that have been filed:

--Mayor Sandy Decker, 143 W. Main St., will seek a second two-year term.

--First district alderman and council president Mason Braunschweig, 590 W. Main St., will seek a second two-year term.

--Fourth district alderman John Sornson, 249 Franklin St., will seek reelection for a two-year term.

--Former mayor and alderwoman Janis Ringhand, 412 Fowler Circle, will run for the second district seat. Current second district alderman Fred Juergens, 401 Badger Drive, won't seek reelection. Ringhand also plans to run for the District 1 county board seat.

--Third district alderman Tony Wyse, 112 Grove St., has not filed papers yet, but said he plans to seek office again.

--Judge Thomas Alisankus will seek reelection for a four-year term. Candidates must file papers with Walton by 5 p.m. on Jan. 2 at city hall, 31 S. Madison St.

One resident told me during the last city election that the key to grabbing votes in Evansville was to have the most yard signs. Whether that’s true or not, they’ll likely be showing up before you know it.

What do you think the biggest issue(s) should be in the election?

I think it is concerning that Alderman Juergen's isn't running again? He alledgedly wanted to push Lake Leota through without public consent and was willing to "take the heat" from his constituents if he didn't get re-elected. If he wasn't planning on running this is very manipulative. Perhaps he had a change of heart and was intending to run at the time he stated that?

All the money they think they can spend. I think we are really in crapper if she gets elected. Her and decker both casting votes is a very scary thought.
