Digging it up

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Saturday, November 3, 2007 - 12:25 p.m.

The last few times I’ve done stories on the Lake Leota dredging project, I’ve received frustrated comments from residents wondering what’s taking so long to fill the lake back up. They don’t want it to be taken over by nature and never filled again. Given it’s the centerpiece of the park, people want to be enjoying recreational activities there. But, a big price tag accompanies the project with many questions about where the money will come from.

Plans are moving forward, however, and here’s the latest.

Hey Dale, thanks for your comment! Good questions. I'm sure it does look a little odd to a newcomer.

The city opened the dam and drained the lake in 2005 to compact the soil, get rid of rough fish and examine the lakebed. When the city first drained the lake, no plan or timetable was set because officials didn't know what they would find or if the lake would dry out. Now the city is moving forward with the above plans.

A group of concerned citizens has formed SOLE-Save Our Lake Environment. Learn more on their site at http://lakeleota.org/default.jsp.

GR8 blog! I'm new to Evansville, from Janesville (less than a year). I've seen the green grass where the famous lake once was and I wondered what happened? So where is the lake water? Why was it drained anyway? Thanks for info. Dale
