Ripple effects
There's no doubt GM's announcement Monday to eliminate a shift at the Janesville plant will be felt throughout the county.
According to data that GM provided to The Gazette back when local workers went on strike in September, 62 people from the Evansville zip code worked at the plant. My heart goes out those people and the many other families impacted by the news.
There's obvious ripple effects at places such as Lear and LSI, but what about in the smaller communities around the county? How will the news affect you, your family, your neighbors or your business in Evansville?

I grew up in Detroit; and when the auto industry went to hell there, it pretty much destroyed the the city, and surrounding areas. The whole city was a wreck with hugh unemployment which leads to crime, gangs, drugs, ext ext..Many (including my parents) got the heck out of there...
I'm not trying to paint a gloom and doom picture for this area, but it's not a pretty picture when people are layed off in masses.

Great points, all of them. The tax base is going to see serious erosion all over the county;income tax, sales tax, etc.. We'll have to see maintenance and service cutbacks everywhere as the State is already in a $650 million budget hole.
