Officers promoted at department

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Thursday, December 11, 2008 - 10:44 a.m.

And now an update on the police department, since you guys had so much fun with my update on the fire department last week.

The ripple effects of former Lt. Art Phillips' death continue. He served as the department’s second-in-command.

The Evansville Police Commission approved the promotion of officer Jay Koehler to lieutenant on Wednesday night, Police Chief Scott McElroy said.

Koehler started part time at the department in January 1998 and was promoted to full time a year later, he said.

The commission also approved the promotion of officer Mike Laufenberg to investigator and hired Mathew Nanke as a patrol officer.

All appointments will take effect Jan. 3.

Art did a lot for the department and he will deeply be missed. I am glad to see the department attempting to move forward. Like many agencies, EPD does a lot with very little. Congrats to the Officer's who were promoted.

E.P.D.(like the M.P.D.) does a good job with the resources they have. They catch the bad guys/gals and serve the citizens well.

Public safety makes up 43% of the expenses of the general tax fund of Evill. It's sad that the cops have to use a "house" and 1 car garage to get by. They have to leave most of their patrol vehicles outside in all climate conditions.

The E.P.D. probably is (most likely) the largest income generator of the public safety sector in Evill. Kinda ironic that they and the E.M.T. get "hand me down" buildings to use when F.D. gets the shiny new one. Kinda makes one wonder where the priorities are in Evill......
