Picking the city's top news

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 3:07 p.m.

It's that time of year again when our newsroom puts together its list of top stories for the year. Reporters submit stories from their beats, and then everyone votes on the top 10.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), none of the Evansville stories from this year made it in the top 10.

I took a quick breeze (emphasizing quick) through my archives and here's some of the top ones I came up with, in no particular order. What do you think was the top story for Evansville?

--Voters approve referendum to dredge Lake Leota.

--Evansville loses two very involved community members: Police Lt. Art Phillips and jail officer Dale Bryant.

--North Prairie Productions decides to end its planned biodiesel plant, which was already under halted construction.

--Fire district builds a new fire station.

--City's first hotel opens.

--Summer road construction rips up part of downtown, again.

--A former football player and her mother filed a federal lawsuit alleging discrimination by coaches and staff.

--ABC's "Supernanny" films a local family.

I think that anyone who judges the Kern family should ask themself "Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?"

How could the untimely death of Lt. Art Phillips not be one of the top ten stories of 2008 considering the amount of coverage his death and funeral? I know he is greatly missed at the police dept, the county board room, and the many other community involvements he had.
