Costly garbage

The record-high fuel prices are hitting everyone and everywhere, including your garbage now. It’s no surprise to see fuel surcharges being added to services left and right.

This time it’s for Veolia Solid Waste Midwest, and the city council last night approved the surcharge. Residents won’t see it immediately added to any bills though, because property taxes already are paid for the year.

The surcharge will cost the city about $5,000 for the last six months of this year. That money will have to come from somewhere, and City Administrator Dan Wietecha said to expect a budget amendment likely in July.

“If there’s a fuel surcharge that goes in midyear … I have to find other places to make cuts or take it from a rainy day fund,” he said.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, the council approved a 7-percent room tax for the city.
