Paddling away

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Tuesday, April 21, 2009 - 9:38 a.m.

Being able to paddle or row around Lake Leota is getting closer to reality. It looks like plans for R & A Canoeing are moving forward to rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboats.

I wrote about the proposal here, and below is what appears in today’s paper.

Also, here’s the business proposal that the Tierneys presented to the park board Monday night.

What do you think? Will you rent a boat? Would you travel from around the county to the park for a day to be able to do this?

Boat rental business on Lake Leota gets green light

EVANSVILLE—Plans for a boat rental business on Lake Leota are moving forward after the park board Monday night gave preliminary approval of the plan.

The plan presented by Robert Tierney needs to be reviewed by the city attorney and administrator next, board chair Janis Ringhand said. The business would be called R & A Canoeing and would rent kayaks, canoes and paddleboats.

“He presented us a very nice business plan,” she said, that includes liability insurance, life jackets, security and other similar items.

“Everyone was very encouraging and enthusiastic about it.”

City officials are determining what permits are needed and will be working on a contract, city administrator Dan Wietecha said.

The business would be ready to go for summer, and an opening may be collaborated with the opening of the swimming pool in the park on May 29, Ringhand said.

Pretty simple, as you pointed out by posting under 'handles' people can post anon. Right. You don't really know who you are talking to. I think one of these posters besides Jim that is posting on here is a certain council member sounds like them, same points brought out that they have brought out before. No one really knows who another is on here. Pretty darn simple.

WOW!
All of this from a piece on rowing/paddeling on the water.
QueenB/Curtaincall: You seem to be in tune with the council. Why not join up and put your ideas to good use instead of hiding behind your keyboard spewing poison. Get out there and make a difference. If you can't/won't do that then
please try to be a little more tolerant of those that ARE trying.

Also if you want agendas and minutes from all or some of the City committee's, go to the City's website and sign up for e-notify. It is simple to do and you can pick and choose what you want.

I wonder if Jim was on the planning commission when they approved 'Westfield Meadows.' I would be curious to know if he is responsible for that mess. The city should have to pay all of those home owners. They will never be able to sell their homes for what they paid for them.

Oh by the way the money they gave to the Eager building, a.k.a. Roger Berg's project. WAS more than they normally give for anyone one project. They broke their own 'policy' if they even have one and let them selves be swayed by once again a contractor. Its come into to question more than once if that Tif district will survive. They had better hope so , or ONCE again the tax paying citizens of Evansville will pay for their mistakes. You see I do read the minutes, go to the meetings and read the Observer. Actually if you can't make it to the meetings the Observer is the next best things, as he records the meeting. They can't get away from their own lies or story twisting as all people have to do is listen to the audio. It's all in their own words. But Jim would not mention that, as he knows.. they have screwed this town. Just look at our taxes.

Oh but Jim you know she is right. It must drive you nuts when the Gazette does articles on Evansville because there is so much crap going on it would make most sick. Lets Start with the Main Street project??? HELLO are you talking about the giant rumble strip??? THAT WENT way over budget,, are you talking about the EAGER BUILDING and the the million the city poored into that? WHAT are you talking about... She said nothing about he cost of the lake, because that due to the economy did come in under expected estimates. BUT they take out they BORROW the money for the lake and then wonder how the heck they are going to pay for other things. LIKE as was put stealing from the E. M. S. account. The facts? Jim would distort the facts anyway he could as I do believe he sits on the same council that has created this disaster. So he would try to put a spin on things. It makes them look as incompetent as they are. IF you want the facts go to the Evansville Observer. Just google Evansville Observer and he has audio from these meetings, and reports.. Jim is lying. Good try Jim, but all people have to do is go the Evansville Observer and they can listen for them selves. They can read for themselves. Evansville's checkook is overdrawn thanks to mismanagement by this council. No I don't run the Observer just a faithful reader. Who likes the FACTS not the stories Jim tells.

I'd like to ask Gazette readers to ignore the complaints of this reader, "Pat." I'm not sure why s/he is so negative but his/her posts are just very often wrong.

The lake project came in under both estimate and budget after garnering 70% approval from the taxpayers.

The Main St project came in on budget and has gotten national recognition for project management.

There are still issues to be worked out on the redesign of the EMS/Police facility but kudoes go to Alders for not taking the bait on a $400,000 EMS building proposal.

The Evansville Council has been using zero-based budgeting to hold the line on property taxes despite what this one poster claims.

It has got to be very slow Gina in your newsroom for you to do so many stories on this lake. It is getting very old. Why don't you do a story on Evansville's city council and how they are over budget on every single project they are doing right now. How they are thinking about stealing money from the E.M.S. account to pay for the unneeded, way to small police dept they are putting together. Now there is a story.

Come from Janesville? I live in Evansville and would not walk or waste the gas to drive to that lake. Where the xxxx do you think you are going to 'paddle' your boat to ? IT is a small, small , very expensive lake. You will be going in circles. What a freakin joke.

I would hope that the Park board has enough foresight to put the rent $$$ collected from Mr. T. into a seperate account. This would be dedicated for lake maintainence (sp?) and not wasted on other venues....

Has anyone checked on the dirt that was dug from the lake and spread on the farm field??? It's heading back to the lake at an alarming rate......

I'm definitely interested in renting a kayak to paddle around the lake. I'd come from Janesville to partake in this opportunity.
