Sewer rates on the rise

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Monday, August 24, 2009 - 2:43 p.m.

It seems like several area communities are talking about sewer rates and upgrades, Evansville included.

Here's the situation in a nutshell:

The city needs to upgrade its wastewater treatment to comply with state standards. Earlier this month, the city council awarded the bid to a Fond du Lac contractor. They should start soon on the $7.2 million upgrades. The city also received $4 million in federal stimulus money to pay for the project.

But, water utility users will see an increase on their bills next year. How much is still up in the air. The discussion continues tomorrow at the public works committee meeting, which includes on its agenda: "Discussion and possible recommendation to City Council regarding sewer rate increase."

The meeting is at 6 p.m., Tuesday (tomorrow) at the Public Works Shop, 535 S. Madison St.

Think on this....the tiny village of Brooklyn (pop 985) rebuilds their main street (Hwy 92) Evill rebuilds its main street. Brooklyn builds a new Fire Station, Evill gets a new fire "taj mahal" (less helicopter pad....sorry E.F.D.) Brooklyn hires C.D Smith to build a new W.W.T. plant, Evill hires Smith for thier W.W.T.

See any paralellism here??? Evill can not stand to be without whatever Brooklyn has new.

I would be highly suspicious if Evill does not raise their rates by ATLEAST 200%. Anything less would be a "disspointment" to the taxpayers of Evill. They expect to be "jacked" by atleast this amount, past experience dictates this is the "norm" for the taxpayers....
