Thousands attend Fourth festivities

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Friday, July 10, 2009 - 4:05 p.m.

While I have yet to celebrate a Fourth of July in the area (our family always gathers up north), it kind of amazes me how many people turn out for the festivals in the small communities. Yet the Janesville festival only saw 1,000 people through its gates. OK, I just remembered I went to the fabulous Shopiere fireworks a couple years and couldn't believe the crowd.

Evansville attracted record crowds last week--at least 2,000 people on Thursday night and at least 4,000 Saturday night, according to organizers. The numbers are in, and here's an overview from organizers at Evansville Community Partnership:

-- More than 250 people visited the Grove Society’s Baker Building open house on Sunday. The Baker Building Museum Grand Opening is set for Oct. 4, 2009.

-- At least 200 local volunteers came out to run the four day event totaling at least 7,200 volunteer hours given back to the community.

-- More than 80 quilted articles beautified the Eager Economy Building on Sunday afternoon.

-- The Trolley was full for all five tours. "Discover Wisconsin" film crew rode along, too.

-- Magnolia 4-H, 1st Wisconsin Young Marines, Cub Scout Pack 514, and Klondike Farms were winners for their floats in the parade.

-- The 4th annual car show brought in more than 100 machines to the lower ball diamond. Participants received door prizes, dash plaques and trophies for the winners in each class.

-- It took more than 55 local businesses donating cash, goods, and/or services to fund the event.

I worked for years in Evansville and helped out with the 4th of July. It's a great event and the reason it does so well is that there are many organizations involved in its running. That means more people have a desire and a reason to go. KUDOS to Evansville for doing it great again!!

The "low" attendance at janesvilles 4th of july celebration are very misleading, in my opinion. The stories are just using figures of those who went through the gates. There is no real way of measure the number of people who came to see the fireworks. It was a HUGE # of people. The attendace was simply down in those who went to the festivities.
I always ride my bike down to it the years I have went (unbelievable that hardly anyone else does that, with the masses of traffic, congestion, road rage, ext) and just riding all around the general vicinity it was wall to wall with people set up in parking lots, and on the sides of streets all around the area, in every direction you went.
