No news not good news for funding

It appears Evansville won't get stimulus money for another police officer.

The department had applied for stimulus money to add another officer. Chief Scott McElroy said today he hasn't heard anything about his application, but a news release Tuesday shows Evansville isn't one of the winners.

Digging into the COPS Web site, you can actually see how each application ranked. It looks like Evansville scored only 29.62 points out of a 100 as far as possible points in the application process. It ranked 77.5 percent in fiscal need index, but only 16.2 percent in crime and community policing index.

Milwaukee was the big winner in the state, getting more than $10 million to add 50 officers.

I have to wonder how badly they would really need a extra officer if they were not so busy trying to squeeze the accreditation and moving business in with the job they are suppose to be doing.

eville, Here's what I wrote in a previous story regarding your question:

Calls for service increased 16 percent from 2007 to 2008, McElroy said. Last year, the department had 10,503 calls for service—up from 6,635 in 2002.

License plate renewals also increased 20 percent last year over 2007, and vehicle inspections increased 49 percent.

"We're getting busier all the time, and staff stays real busy as it is, so we are ready now to add, but we just couldn't afford it," McElroy said.

Does anyone know their reasoning for adding another officer?

Geez, BIG surprise there.
The most corrupt city in the state with the most political ties to DC gets the most stimulus $$$$. Then the politicians can run around and claim they "created" 50 jobs in Milwaukee with the stimulus, forgetting to mention that harley is in the process of laying off 1,000 workers, along with countless other business' there.
