Look out for dem der deer

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Thursday, November 5, 2009 - 4:56 p.m.

It must be fall.

I can tell by the number of car-deer crashes in my daily Green County Sheriff's Department log. Just west of Evansville, off in the rolling hills and quiet county roads is deer country.

Be careful. Twice this week there's been six or more car-deer crashes in one day in the log. Hopefully I won't see your name in there.

Here's what Tuesday's log looked like:

Over the weekend, I called the State Patrol dispatcher, as is normal routine here at the Gazette, and the dispatcher said the only thing happening was a lot of "suicidal deer."

Dispatchers are usually a dispassionate bunch, so it was nice to hear a joke from one of them.

I have heard you dont need to stay to wait for police for a deer accident report . Is this true? Would you need to stay for report if you have ins? I do know if you can do it safely to stay on the road vs veering off the road. If you stay on the road it is considered comp not collision and some dont have a deductible on this coverage and it shouldnt affect you rates as bad as collision. Yes that would be a lot to think of when staring in the eyes of Bambi. I have been very lucky and just near misses so far. Knock on rubber haha.
