Public art popularity

By GINA DUWE ( Contact )   Monday, September 21, 2009 - 9:13 p.m.

It seems like public art projects are all the rage the last few years. It all started with the cows, I think. Several area projects have ensued, including the Chevys in Janesville and horses in Lake Geneva. This year Evansville got in on the fun with windmills.

Earlier this summer we strolled around Lake Geneva to check out the Prancing Carousels, which were auctioned off last weekend. It's so neat to see the different themes and mediums the artists come up with. These were a couple of my favorites.

In Evansville, The Windmills on Parade are up and blowing in the wind. The windmills on display will be auctioned off at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4 during the 2nd Annual Harvest Windmill Festival. Half of the proceeds will go to the artist while the other half goes toward festival costs.

So, you've seen them up for a few weeks, walked and driven past them often enough. Which one is your favorite and why? Will you be bidding for one?

Has anyone noticed how ironic it is that an area who has spent tens of thousands of $$$ drafting legislation on the siting and construction of windmills, is holding a "celebration" about them??

It's so typical, the ones that complain the most NEVER lift a hand to help! You have NO idea how much time and effort it takes to get an event together. If everyone would get involved the festival could be a HUGE annual community event. As far as Farmer's Markets go, most vendors won't participate when its the 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd annual because they are already doing well at the earlier established markets. If you have better ideas, come to the meetings and get involved! There are many things that could be included at this type of festival, however, everything has a cost, materials, advertising, time, etc. Stop complaining and help out!

a1writer, that sounds great a very neat idea. Being very serious when I ask, how do you protect these murals from vandals?

It sounds as if feelings are mixed about your public art. Maybe you need to think of murals in the area that celebrate the city's history and engage in more year round efforts instead of a one-shot event.
In our small Missouri town we have a public art project that has impacted the community. See our blog and website, at www.cubamomurals.com.
It has boosted tourism, and our 4th graders study a mural curriculum. We give tours and the murals dress up the streets.

Evansville city leaders have made many Evansville residents unhappy. This Windmill Fest would be nice, if more effort was put into it. But Evansville always has had the habit of trying to make things look nice. It's like putting frosting on burnt cupcakes, they still suck.

My mom went to this last year. She kept laughing saying there was more Rock County Jail inmates there, than people who came for the festival during the day. She was told they were there for clean up? I think its kind of unnerving being there were young children there.

reader1, sorry cc is correct. It was lame. It was like they made no real effort to get anyone for the farmer's market. There was nothing to speak of in the tent area, until night, and only if you like being around drunks and loud music. . However there were some local artists in the down town area. I mean if that is someone's thing, it was interesting. But in terms of what Evansville did themselves not very impressive. It was disappointing. I had heard about it for over a month and thought it would be fun thing for the family to spend a Saturday doing. We were done within in a half a hour. If they are going to such extents to bring people to town, they should put more effort into it. I would not spend my time doing it again.

Dorks, it was the first one they threw last year give them a break. I thought it was nice. Good music, good food, w/o all the drunks like during the 4th of July. Curtaincall and Pat are generally negative, unsatisfied people. You both must have sad sad lives....does it hurt to be so grumpy all the time? Sorry you have no friends. I like the windmills and agree with only a part of what curtaincall wrote...I think they should keep them downtown. Curtaincall..don't be threatened, we still arn't friends and you still don't have any.

Cute pics, Gina! I haven't had a chance to see these on display. Might be something I do this weekend. Thanks for the idea!

if you are lucky you can find about 4 vendors at the farmer's market( or what ever they called it) 2 of which were selling the same thing. You can go to the tent area where there might be some business owners 'promoting' there business, and they would rather talk to each other and not potential customers. I drove from New Glarus last year and wish I had not. Some one needs to show that town how to put on a festival. I would love to have the gas money back.

The Windmills are what finally make the downtown look decent. They are very nice. To bad they are not permanent. When they are gone it will go back to being the same drab, and dull down town it always has been.

*** Don't get to excited about this Windmill Festival, it was pretty damn lame last year. Not worth the gas money for anyone who had to drive from out of town. I hope they put more effort into it this year or don't do it at all.

I had been looking forward to it and it was very disappointing.
