Oooooklahoma!
I got an e-mail today about this weekend's performances of "Oklahoma!" I've never even seen the musical or movie, but everytime I hear the reference, the song just sticks.
"Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain..."
OK, I'll spare you the rest.
Anyway, if you haven't seen Evansville Community Theatre's show yet, this is the second, and last, weekend of showings at the Performing Arts Center at the high school, 640 S. 5th St.
More info here.
We featured the ECT performances in a story in our kicks section a couple weeks ago, pointing out how much of a family affair this production is. Good times.
Now if I could just get the song out of my head.

At least we don't have toe-dancing around here. How'd that ever get started?

By the way, whenever I drive through Oklahoma, it's always nonstop. And I never see anyone singing and prancing around along the Interstate.
Though once when I stopped for gas, there was this old guy hanging around singing "I enjoy being a girl."

nenni98, I meant in the Janesville area. I've seen good drama in Madison.
I just hope no one transforms Streetcar Named Desire into a musical.

Gazettefan, my company took all of us to a show at the Overture Center last November. Can't think of the name offhand but it was a Broadway tour and was very good.
I, personally, like the variety of talents that a musical showcases; singing, dancing, acting, set design, technical design, etc. I don't have a great singing voice (I can carry a tune without a bucket, but that's about it! LOL) so I've always done plays as far as onstage work goes. Thankfully, my role in Oklahoma! doesn't require me to sing much, but others who do are amazingly talented and I could listen to them sing all night!

nenn68, my point is: why are there no professional productions of straight drama in this area? Do people feel short-changed if the actors don't burst into song and dance?
At least Beloit College staged an amateur performance of Streetcar Named Desire recently. It wasn't very good but at least it wasn't a musical.

Gazettefan, this is actually the first musical I've acted in. I've been involved in the production of others, and have acted in several plays. My love of live theater (plays and musicals) goes back to my parents taking me as a child to the high school performances.
What's your point?

What is it about people around here when they think that theater only involves actors bursting into song?
nenn68, ever done true drama?

Ahh, Robert Goulet. I'm going to have to agree with Elvis on this one.

As a member of the cast of Oklahoma!, I may be biased but this is a really great show! We've got singin', shootin', dancin', and lots of laughin' so it'll be well worth going to see! A great way to beat the heat! I really hope to see you there!

You've got problems, we've got solutions! To get that Oklahoma tune out of your mind, just concentrate on the following:
Each evening, from December to December,
Before you drift to sleep upon your cot,
Think back on all the tales that you remember
Of Camelot.
Ask ev'ry person if he's heard the story,
And tell it strong and clear if he has not,
That once there was a fleeting wisp of glory
Called Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!
